Finally Got The T180

After being put back a few days waiting for parts (water pump) I finally got the wife's T180. It is a 57 plate in silver with 75k miles on and it runs like a dream. Big gob of power at 2k rpm and runs out of puff at 3.5k. Was expecting it to pull through to about 4.5k like my old Alfa diesel but not having any of it.

Anyway, it's quite grumbly at low revs which surprised me as I didn't notice it on the test drive and reminds me even more of my Alfa which was a 5 cyl engine. Only problem with the car is the exhaust which has loose baffles and what sounds like a small blow at tickover. Hopefully this will be sorted under warranty.

Found it gives better mpg in 5th than 6th at mway speeds as well. Driving at just over 2k rpm with the turbo just spooling up seems to be the sweet spot, same as other diesels I've had.

Good to hear you pleased with your 180, long may it stay that way but be sure to keep your eyes open for the problems :g:

It has a year's Toyota warranty with it and isn't 7 years old till Jan 2015 but I will probably put 2 years warranty on it next September unless there is a limit to the value of a claim.

Has yours already got an extended warranty because Toyota only had a 3yr warranty up until the end of March 2010 when they changed to 5 years.

Oh yes I forgot the180 were given a 7yr engine warranty because of the possible engine problems

Cost of warrantys for these cars is huge .... It may of course have had the engine changed already. ....

I got the car from a main dealer - it looks like it may have been used as a demo vehicle as Toyota were the first reg'd owners then the previous owners who had it 5 years.haven't checked engine nr yet but have the sales invoice from previous owner. Paid 18k for it but got finance which took the total paid to 23k! Ouch.

It could have been a pre registered vehicle which is a bit of a tax fiddle and one used to get the sales numbers up......

The engine number is on the right hand side of the block at the front but no one yet has managed to find theirs.. They are so well hidden its untrue. Quite how anyone can read them beats me....

I've got the rest of this week off,and making it my mission to find this elusive engine number.

Well I'll spend an hour at least ;-)

Managed to borrow one of those bendy mirror thingys

£18k for a 12month old T180 wasn't a bad deal,considering they were around £26k when new,iirc?

If you suspect the middle exhaust box is going get it checked out under warranty, at around £7-800 they're not cheap.

It had 12k miles put on by Toyota.

Thanks for the price on the exhaust. That's cheaper than I had read butthat includes the cat I think. Would putting an aftermarket stainless exhaust void the warranty. Cheaper than Toyota system but could give them an excuse if the engine does go pop.

Paul ..Exhaust under warranty ?? Surely you jest ? Also the full retail price is near 1200 quid you will do well to get one much under £1000

If it is blowing I have been sold a car that will fail the mot in January. Not sure where this leaves me regarding road worthiness of the car given that I was told by the salesman it would be dealt with when it went through the workshop.

The paint chips we asked to be touched up were ignored so I guess that ignoring the exhaust could mean they dealt with it..

Have you only just bought it? If so, get it sorted now, don't leave it, the exhaust will not be covered under a used warranty. If they said the paint would be touched up, get that done too, leaving things too long will result in them not being done

Thanks Kingo. Got the car last Saturday and it's booked in tomorrow. The guy on the service desk made a passing comment that the exhaust should last 12 years......

Guess I might be caught in the void between what a salesman will say and what the workshop will do in order to maximise the profit on the car. I guess if they say it's ok I will get them to mot the car asap.

Got enough expense coming up with twins on the way so putting off a big bill for a few months would be useful.

Stick to your guns, if the exhaust is blowing then it is NOT of satisfactory quality, dont be fobbed off. Also make sure the sales manager knows the paintwork that was promised to be touched up has also been avoided. Be firm but polite, you are only asking to be done what was promised in any case, don't leave these things, much better done in the first couple of weeks when it is fresh in everyones mind

Kingo

I managed to get a Toyota mid box supplied and fitted by my local RRG for £780 earlier this year.

I think the goodwill between us was reflected in the price,as we have bought two new Ravs from them, and always had great service.

As Kingo said get them to re MOT it now, don't wait.leaking exhaust is an automatic fail.

Whoever said 12 years life for a Toyota exhaust must have been smoking something;-)

Only my opinion, but I would only fit a Toyota exhaust.

We were as they say blessed with twins'ha 24 yrs ago now..It's definately a two person job,but well worth the effort, they bounce of each other, literally. ;-) having to buy 2 of everything a drain on the wallet, having good back up from family and friends helps a lot.
