Any1 here running on coilovers? . Ive noticed a recent boom in cheap coil kits (Avo, H&R around £500 mark etc) which isnt far off a nice set of good ol springs+dampers. Is it really worth it as far as reliability is concerened?Im thinking of fitting a kit v soonish just wanted some feedback.

??? coil overs are springs and dampers ! LOL. just the coil is 'over' the damper, the same as in mcpherson strutt.

what car are you planning on changing the suspension ?

not being funny but would you use them to there full potental? i know people running coilovers and they fitted them and never touched them since, plus if you do play you have to know what you are doing as you could turn a normal car into a death trap! please dont take this personaly its just a differnet view.

What I meant is the current coilover kits prices arent too far off 'normal' ('good ol') springs/damper kits soz bout my wording  Im not dead set on gettin coilovers just seein a lot of kits around these days and thought itd be interestin to see if others here have them. I do realise that if I do get em the characteristics of the car will have to be adjusted(camber etc). It wont be a death trap(I hope! ). I might not be able to get a coiloverkit anyway as my car has toyotas blo0dy 'super strut suspension' which kinda complicates things a lil. I take it coilovers are more for the track enthusiasts??

Are you talking about the ADJUSTABLE coil over kits, where you put a threaded pipe over the strutt base with the bottom spring perch wound onto it and wind it up or down to your required height ? or are you talking about adjustable dampers in your existing strutts ???

sorry for being thick, but if your car has the toyota superstrutts you cant fit anything other than another McPherson strutt unless your going to undertake major suspension fabrication ! still an a-arm front and 4bar rear would be nice ;)

Yes!. Again sorry bout my wording it aint u bein thick :)

Its crappy havin super strut. It isnt even reliable ive found out that they on average last only 60000 miles before they start packin in. Kinda limits my options:( I was told off a toyota dealer that I could get em switched for the macphersons but Ill just wait around till they pack in as it would seem a waste atm. Oh well. <_<

I've used coilovers on my 95 Corolla since I bought it. I just recently changed them out. The orignal struts were McPhersons and had replace those with KYB Nitro Gased Struts, then installed newer coilovers. The reason why I chose coilovers rather than lowering springs is because of the way I drive. I do alot of cornering at high speeds but never drag and we'll I just run the **** out of my car.

You want to make sure you have the right spring rate. ex. (450 springs) which is 450 lbs per compressed inch. 450 is pretty high and stiff, I suggest 310 - 345 springs.. When purchasing coiliver find out the the spring rate. Place higher spring rates in the front and the lower spring rate in the rear if you have a FWD vehicle. Some coilovers comes with a top cap which holds the spring in place during compression and de-compression. Get the top caps that have the hump in it. Avoid any flat top caps due to the fact the upper mount assembly won't move a well during steering. Some coilover require a washer to prevent a full bottom out. Just a few things to consider.
