Avensis 1.8 Vvi 2004 Petrol - Oil Consumption Engine Problems

Hi, recently bought the above and its now blowing blue smoke, consuming massive amounts of oil and oil is coming up through the dipstick.

We have been told could be piston rings or require pat of the engine to be replaced, has anyone had a similar issues and resolved it?

If we swop the engine, is this a one in one out job or will we need the ECU from the donar car?

Aside from this its a lovely car!
