Dashboard Light Now Flashing

Hey, can anyone answer me this?

My engine management light has been on for about 5 years, pretty much since i've had the car but the cars been fine and I was told not to worry about it by a garage.

Today when I am driving it starts flashing (still amber) but when I stop after a short time it just stays solid again. When I drive again it flashes again.

its an 03 avensis and I really don't want to spend any money on it as i'm getting rid of it next year to get a newer one but can anyone tell me what it means and should I just ignore it or is it dangerous?

Thanks

it could be any number of things. Either find a local garage who can get the codes out of it or buy a code reader and see. Without codes its difficult to say if its safe to keep driving or not

Have you tried removing the Battery negative lead for half an hour as this may clear the fault light.

Pete.

On this model the MIL will reset on it's own if there is no fault, the fact that it has been on for five years indicates that you have been driving the car in a faulty condition for this period of time.

Hi, thanks Revband, doesn't sound good then.

I've just got back from being away and the light is still flashing, drove it around at the weekend and its not using twice as much fuel as it normally does! Doesn't seem to be leaking though no ideas where its going!

I guess that you mean it is using more fuel than normal?. If that is the case possibly the light comes on when a fault occurs and then starts flashing if a second fault developes.

If using more fuel then whatever the fault is it is causing over fuelling.
