Does My Diesel Have A Catalytic Converter?

Just seeing in the news that there is a surge in the theft of catalytic converters because of the precious metal content.

Can anyone tell me if our 4.2 diesel is likely to have one?

Hopefully they are not easily accessible on our RAVs. I know it isn't in the middle section of my recently replaced exhaust - I think it is in the front section...others on here will know!

You more than likely will have one but pretty certain it isn't an mot fail if you don't have one.

If you do fall foul of thieving scum just get a straight through pipe made up.

haha - anywhere between Manchester and Glasgowshire.

far as I know, the CAT is up near the exhaust manifold - well it was on mine afore I had them removed. Bldy things melted wan o ma turbo fans !! the other went when I had the exhaust made specially and uses a racing ecu engine management system which fur a diesel owner is a bit like taking a train to Australia.

On a 4.2 D4D, it's the front-most box.

We have had DOZENS of them stolen off vehicles in our compounds, they show no mercy, they are not removed with loving care, they use a pipe cutter tool and just cut the cat out from either side of the pipe, which is fine if you have one attached to the manifold as they wil leave that alone and move to one in the pipe. Hilux are worse, you can slide underneath in the dark, cut the cat out and roll under the next one, it causes thousands of £££ on each car as we end up replacing the exhaust too! It is so rife we now REMOVE all cats from commercial vehicles in our compounds

I could mention the usual culprits but could be accused of bias so will shurrup, but that particular group of people pay local youths to do it, give them a fiver per cat, collect the goods from a pre determined collection point and they are never seen again

Yes, it's dreadful. But a good earner for the trade, it seems then.

Some (genuine) cats are worth a lot of money scrap, aftermarket ones are not worth a lot, there are the bare minimum of precious metals in them, thats why they are cheaper to buy!

I doubt they are an "earner" as the cost of removing waste these days is stupid, it only offsets the liability
