M.p.g. Query

I've just completed my first tankful of fuel and noticed something odd. The first two or three journeys returned around 58 m.p.g. With time this dropped to 50 m.p.g. and the trip recorder has measured an average of 55.4 m.p.g. Measuring miles travelled against fuel put in at top up time gives a "real" fuel consumption of 53.1 m.p.g. That's quite a variation. The other odd thing is that the range left to travel has changed from 470 miles ( suggesting 47 m.p.g., a rather low figure  ) to 460 miles at refill time, suggesting that my fuel consumption is on the increase as I go.

Two questions come to mind. As a light footed driver I find the "real" average of 53 a little disappointing. With time in a new car I would expect that figure to improve but in the light of the apparently steady increase in consumption I am beginning to doubt that. Has anyone else experienced this in the early days of their car ?

Overall I must say how impressed I am with the smooth way that the car operates although in keeping with other drivers I would agree that 15" wheels would be a better option for this car and wonder why they are only available on the Icon ?

I had the old shape Auris Hybrid and it averaged 55 MPG overall, you will find the MPG suffers in the winter

You have a brand new car, do not panic about the consumption, you will need some miles under your belt for the car to run in. You will adjust your driving style accordingly, there are plenty of driving tips on this site if you search for them, to get the best out of your Hybrid
