Avensis 2.0 T4 Fuel Pump Problem.

Hi folks.

I've got a 54 plate Avensis with 123k on the clock. Today my other half used it to drive to Brighton from our home in Swindon.

This is from her words, so it might sound a bit vague!

She stopped in Brighton to find somewhere to park, and when she went to pull away the car stalled. She tried to start it a few times, but to no avail. She called RAC out who, she said, tried to start it a few times and said something about the fuel pump. The mechanic sprayed something into something under the bonnet, and the car started up. It then started 3 times after that while he was there, and also started when she left Brighton. It also started just fine when I tried it back home.

I'm no expert on fuel pumps but can anyone give me a vague idea what might be up.

I was under the impression that there was a pump in the tank. Is that right? Would there be a pump under the bonnet as well that I need to be aware of?

Could this be contaminated fuel, and most importantly, is this going to cost me big money?

Many thanks for any help you can offer :)

The stock answer is..put some BG244 in her and renew the fuel filter and report back on here with your results first before you do anything else.mate.

Isn't that just for diesel engines? Sorry, didn't realise I didn't post it's a 2.0 petrol.

Some of the breakdown guys spray a bit of Easy Start into the air filter to get the car running. It's volatile stuff which acts as the fuel, so the car will run on it even if there's no petrol in the tank (obviously you'd need to keep spraying it tho). Might explain the comprehensively and accurately described spraying of the stuff into the thing thing.

I'm not 100% sure about the 2.0 petrol but I was informed that the 1.8vvti had a fuel filter inside the tank, but it was designed not to need replaced.

Seems he did put some easy start in. Just puzzled as to why it ran all the way home. Just started it again, and it ran fine for 5 mins before idling to a stop, now it just cranks over. So it seems likely that the pump is on it's way out. I'll try giving the tank a smack while cranking it over tomorrow and see if that shakes it into life. If not, I guess I'm changing a fuel pump!
