Hi everyone,I've been a member of the Toyota forum for years as the wife had a Rav4 until we needed a heftier car to move a half ton horse around...lol, however since then I've bought her an Aygo and there's just one thing that doesn't ring true.I bought it and the fella says I've put £10 in which was showing 2 bars on the gauge,40 odd miles later, its still on 2 bars, let the wife have the car and the next day the last bar was flashing steadily so she put £15 in which took it up to 3 bars, today she had to give me a lift back to work and commented that she had done 118 miles and the bars hadn't moved when all of a sudden 2 bars disappeared and the last one started flashing, so when she's dropped me off I said fill it up,so 20 litres later its full???? I thought they held about 35 litres, something doesn't add up here! Any ideas or is this normal, thanks in advance

Full tank is about 35-36 litres. The bars are not equally divided, the first two or three bars (the upper two or three bars ) contain more petrol than the lower ones. It is one of the unusual and stupid feature of Aygo, the fuel meter is totally unscientific. Don't trust it too much, fill up when you reach the last bar. The best way to test your milage is to fill it up full, reset your mileage meter. Use the car till you reach the last bar. Refill at the same pump to full. Check how much it takes to fill it up. Divide your km /miles by the number of litres or gallon that you filled last.

The fuel gauge in the Aygo and some other models doesn't seem to work well when relatively small amounts of fuel are put in. Based on fuel prices here in Birmingham £10 equates to approx 7.75 litres and £15 to approx 11.6 litres. Try filling up and brimming the tank, and I think you will find the gauge will behave a bit better.

Incidentally, the fuel gauge is non linear, and when the tank is full, the gauge may stay on the first bar for quite a number of miles - something you'll get used to.

Thought as much, bit like my old mk1 escort mexico I had years ago,as long as this is normal then I'm fine with it,its full to the brim at the most,so we'll just keep an eye on it and customise ourselves to the new baby,to be honest I can't believe the economy of the little car,its working out at 54 mpg,we've been used to sub 20's in our other cars.....might get one for myself......

Not sure I can add much to what has already been said. I always fill mine to the brim and record on Fuelly. I have always got over 55mpg, although I am now doing a lot of short runs in traffic so this may drop but I expect it will still be over 50 mpg. The Aygo is very light and it is as economical as my second generation Prius I formerly owned.

Depending on your driving style you may get nearly, or over, 100 miles before the first bar disappears but the others go after perhaps 60 miles. I try to fill up as soon as I am down to the last bar. I have never seen two bars go at once though.

Yeah, that was a bit weird,I actually saw it go from 2 solid bars straight to a steady flashing single bar but when I drove it back from where I bought it from it was on 2 solid bars and they stayed solid all the way home which was 45 miles so I can't understand why it did what it did when my wife was driving it!!,its full now so I'll or she will keep an eye on it and see what happens but I reckon that'll be a long time coming......lol

Probably camber or a gradient. My Yaris could be showing half a tank or a single blinker depending on which way it is facing on a hill

This is my first car that has this idiosyncrasy. Are tank measurement system so difficult to design and calibrate or are Toyota engineers plain lazy?

I do 35k per year in my Aygo and have currently done 100k miles, and with my daily commute being 130 miles i have got to know my fuel guage well. The only advice i can give is to fill up your tank to the brim, and based on your driving style work out with the trip meter how many miles you can do on a whole tank.. over a few fill ups you will have a good idea.

I wont be geeky, but I can literally tell you roughly at what mileage each bar will drop off.

3 days commuting for me is 390 miles.. so im often filling up either every 2 - 3 days depending on how well I drive. I know above there was a comment about filling up when your on the last bar but realistically you need to know how many miles you have left before setting off, if I only filled up on the last bar i would get stranded somewhere.. But i totally agree i have NEVER seen 2 bars drop off at once.

I hope your wife enjoys the car.. they are great.

It is a guage, not a scientific instrument, when the level gets low, put some fuel in ;)

I cannot understand why people get so hung up on what might or might not be left in the tank when the guage is indicating low fuel, just fill it up.....simples!

How low is low, that is the eternal question!

Do whatever you feel comfortable with.

Once you've run out of gas on a dark, cold rainy night you will know and then fill up on two bars for safety's sake.....

My Aygo also does the 2 bar disappearing trick. It never displays only one bar and goes from two bars to flashing the warning.

Just a feature of the level sensor and gauge I guess. It happened twice and never again as I now always fill up as soon as it reaches two bars. Why take chances on getting stranded?

Well,it's done it's 2 bar flashy thing at 222 miles which I worked out at 47 mpg but the wife didn't listen to what I asked (do they ever...lol) and only put £20 of fuel in,so I'll have to wait and brim it again but at 47 mpg my wallets chuffed.....lol

Ahh the joys of Aygo ownership....

Each day when I look at my tax disc I smile ;)

Well, she's now brimmed it at 30.45 litres....How much does it hold because I used it again today and the bars went down from 3 to 2!!!

EDIT.....she's only gone and put in the high octane fuel......doh so it's 29.33 litres now

WOMEN......lol
