Trying to arrange to go over to see this car tomorrow...

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201311069717866/sort/default/usedcars/postcode/wr102pa/radius/1500/transmission/automatic/onesearchad/used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew/fuel-type/diesel/model/rav4/page/5/make/toyota?logcode=p

I would have placed a deposit on it over the phone this afternoon but the Dealer will not agree the PX figure until they have seen my car..... They have offered reasonable money and I've asked for £250 more . I will be PXing at a what is really a sensible figure given that the linked car is in their word absolutely MINT and I think sensibly priced. And given my car is ready to go straight onto the forecourt as the dealer says they will retail it....

Thats one of the 3 I posted up for you with the duff links!

That seems to tick all the boxes Charlie, best of luck.

Garage will not commit to a PX figure on my car until they can view it... The figure I have asked for is 400 quid above the we buy any car offer....... Unless we have a deal agreed that with respect suits us both then I will not take a day out and do that very very long journey....

My point of course is that it is I who has to describe the car and if I miss describe it is I who has lost a day and traveled for nothing . The journey will see off near a tank of diesel as well ..

Given that the garage says they are keen to stock up on 4X4s at this time of the year I thought my car with its history would have been reasonable stock.. It is no exaggeration to say that once washed it could go straight onto the forecourt..

Buying a car these days can be a frustrating business. Its a constant tooing and frooing with the sales Exec going back and forth to the sales manger who makes the decisions.. I was a little to respectful to ask if I could speak to the organ grinder not the monkey as the sales guy seemed a nice bloke.

Basically I'm looking for 250 quid above "trade" value for my car in PX. If I dont get that it can have all winter has to throw at it and I will take a rest from car hunting....

given the WBAC prices are typically rock bottom book and that they they will then retail that car obviously for a profit, I don't think asking £400 above is unreasonable at all for them (your SR Dealer) to commit to.

Wonder if they will backtrack at high speed when you tell them you are definitely not coming.

PS - Take your time driving up there. When I drove down about 250 miles to pick up my White SR150 in a similar situation (PX on unseen trade-on), it cost me more then the ££ cost to change - 3 points on my license with one camera in Northallerton, plus a 're-education' evening due to another camera 40 miles further north!

Can't you email them a load of pics of your car Charlie..plus your service / repair documents ?

If they won't accept that then I wouldn't go all that way either without an agreement.

Mate I'm certainly not driving that distance without an agreement.... There is no way I would miss describe my car I mean what would be the point... What I asked for was an agreement based upon my description.. In all honesty I probably under described the thing !

Once I've traveled that far I'm a captive audience and almost obliged to buy the car.

I was asked at least 6 times to place a deposit and said each time I would only do this when terms could be agreed. The phone call to seal this did not come this morning and so far my call to them has gone unanswered. This of course is the problems when trading at distance.

Forgive the intrusion as I only lurk here occasionally.

As a long term owner of multiples of most of the Toyota range as private cars and Lexus GS for work, I recently went in a different direction after four RAV4s(1 4.1, 2 4.2 and 1 4.3).

We now have Subaru XV and a new Forester XT after initially having had a 2.5 Legacy for a year. I just wanted something "pokier" hence the XT.

Both are petrol( don't fancy diesel/dpf increasing biofuel in the future) and CVT.

First tried CVT when we had a gen 3 Prius and liked it so auto was a min. Each has paddles and either 6(XV) or 8(XT) electronic shifts if you want manual mode,

Build is very tough they will go anywhere pretty much. Looks are subjective but they have always been lower in the list for me compared to performance ,reliability etc. I quite liked the the new RAV exterior but the dash is underwhelming to be kind to it plus I was suspect about the leather quality, I even had to ask the sales guy if it was Softex as in the US and no Xenons.

Handling/braking is excellent in the scoobies especially the XV which is an suv go kart, XT oem tyres are poor (Dueller 400 HL).

Worth a look especially if you may miss the 180 engine(the XT will more than compensate for this)

Cheers

We have a new Forester in the family, an XC diesel, I was quite tempted myself, they're a nice drive and as you say, very well built. What put me off was the dealer network, the nearest established dealer to me is 40 miles away, other local dealers have had short spells with Subaru and soon given up. I did a little bit of reading up on Subaru customer service, the Subaru UK Facebook page was littered with disgruntled customers at the time of reading.

I'm sure they are great cars, more so if you have a local dealer but I have never had cause for complaint with Toyota and for that reason stick with them.

Same with me really. I had a Subaru Legacy SpecB auto - very quick, low mileage, prestine condition but running costs were high with tax, tyres and servicing (and drinking super unleaded) but when the CD head unit broke just out of warranty the sales manager would not take it in as a trade in and was frankly insulting - so I took it straight to Westlands Toyota and traded it in. The Subaru dealer no longer sells Subarus and to this day I still can't believe being told they wouldn't take it as a trade in. So much as I admire the handling of the Subaru, I will stick with Toyota.

At one time, probably because I traded my cars too often, I would do my deal with the dealer principal rather than sales staff at my Toyota dealer. I always got a deal I was happy with and they still made money!

I think the SR advertised is a gem at a reasonable price and I hope they do the deal you want - best of luck Charlie.

Interestingly, 4x4 Magazine have just published their 4x4 Of The Year results which sees the Scoobie Forester take the top spot for Mid-range SUV's.

The RAV 4.4 came 2nd ("Highly Recommended") to the Evoque in the Top Range SUV's section beating off the Freelander, Outlander, Sorento, Santa Fe & CR-V. They tested the Invincible T&G Auto and particularly praised the RAV's taut handling, high equip levels, quality of the interior fittings (they particularly liked the dash) and its practicality.

Not bad, eh?

"Invincible T&G" Sounds good result but what is T&G? I have talented and gifted in my head but I am pretty sure it must be something else!

My Touch and Go not even got voice commandments never mind voice to text, David. Snot even got text FFS.........THE VARIATIONS of who gets what seems astounding and totally confusing from one model and/or country to the next.

They're playing the usual car sales games with you Charlie.

I'd leave the ball in their court now, definately wouldn't call them again.

If they don't sell it within the next month, wouldn't mind betting you'll get a phone call.

Indeed it is, David.

Yours probably doesn't understand your dulcet Gaelic tones, BK. You're right about the variations though, mine will obey verbal commands re txts but if I press the "talk" button on the steering wheel, a message comes up on the screen to say that the option isn't available. Very confusing!
