Buying A Spare Wheel

I'm looking around to buy a spare (steel) wheel for my 2008 rav4 - as I don't want to rely on the useless can of air toyota supply!

Is there anything particular I need to look for? Mytyres do a steel wheel and cheap tyre for about £120 delivered, and as its for emergency use only I'm not too bothered about the quality of tyre. I intend to just keep it in the boot.

Damn - I must have selected the 16" wheel - the 17" steel wheels are £160+ with a tyre!

All I can find are rather expensive alloys! £175 for the wheel alone seems a bit steep. Local breakers might the next option

if my local breakers are typical (and they are a pretty large one) then RAV4.3 wheels (17" and 18") will be very hard to find and likely to be in excess of £80+VAT and still needing refurb if they have them

RAV4.2 wheels will be much more common, definately steel ones, and maybe looking at £50? But they will only be 16" wheels. (Stud pattern and PCD will match though)

I would prefer a simple steel wheel -this is just an emergency spare after all. Next car I buy I'll make damn sure it has a spare of some kind! My old Kia Sportage had a full size spare alloy in the boot

At that price, go for the same pattern alloy and tyre!

you could do a bit of rotation every few thousand miles with on pair and the spare to get use out of the spare tyre - that in itself will be worth what? £80 in terms of increasing time to replace tyres (which you would not do if you got a steel wheel in reality - the brand new tyre would just sit there for years and eventually need replacing through age).

And if you were unfortunate in kerbing a wheel, you would have a ready-made swapout as well to keep the looks sharp ;)

  • 2 weeks later...

Patience has paid off, got an unused Toyota steel17" wheel with a brand new Geolander tyre on for £140 from a local guy on Gumtree, with the required studs as well so I'm well happy with that.

Next thing to try is to remove the underfloor storage compartment to see if the wheel will sit in there!
