Is This Normal ?

Hi everyone, new to the forum :P

Bought this 1999 Yaris CDX 1.0 (Manual) around a week ago which has covered 87,000 miles, has had a recent full service and a new clutch a few thousand miles ago

I couldn't help notice this strange sound while revving, not as noticeable while accelerating, any idea on what this could be or is it normal ?

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks

Ali

I assume you refer to the high pitched whistle sort of noise?

Sounds like a slipping belt to me.. but then it was not very clear - I listened 4-5 times.

If it is, they can be easily tensioned unless the belt is frayed/cracked in which case it's a new belt. (Not difficult but engine mounting has to removed)

Thanks mate

Heres another video and the sound is definitely coming from the left hand side where all the belts are...

Hmm sounds "normal" as much as I can judge by sound.

You can check the various pulleys by trying to rock them sideways by hand - engine stopped of course!

There should be minimal sideways movement or rocking atll... any suggests a bearing is on the way out. Check in particular:

the water pump for sign of dried antifreeze or leaks

and the idler pulley which is under lots of stress ..

Hope that helps.
