Avensis Tyre Noise

I like my old Avensis-its a a bit bland but very reliable and predictable to drive BUT it does seem to have a fair amount of tyre noise. I had Michelin tyres-were very noisy, then Maxxis tyres were better but still noisy. I need to get some more tyres and Falken ZE914's get a good noise rating of only 70dB compared to the 73dB for the Maxxis.

Anyone any words of wisdom regarding tyre noise and the Avensis. The tyres are lasting 20K down to 3.5mm of tread so I do not think there is anything amiss with tracking and wear is even on all tyres.

Any ideas/thoughts?

There have been a few complaints about tyre noise on the Avensis and although my 2010 Estate is a later model than yours the same still applies. Before buying 18 months ago I drove two versions which were identical apart from colour and the tyres fitted. The OEM tyres at that time would seem to have been Bridgestone and Goodyear. Although both test cars were much quieter than my 2003 Honda Accord there was a noticeable difference between the tyre noise on the test cars. The Goodyear Excellence were far quieter than the Bridgestones. I have recently replaced the Bridgestones with a set of Goodyear Efficient Grip they are far quieter than the Bridgestones and also give a more comfortable ride despite the fact I have fitted the 98 load ratings instead of the standard 94. There is also the added bonus of a seemingly better rolling resistance, I am having to adjust my throttle lift off point when coming to obstructions, traffic lights etc as the car rolls more freely.

I have never used the two marques you have listed so cannot comment on them. My philosophy with tyres, even on older cars, has always been to buy premium ones, in a past employment I witnessed the results of too many serious and fatal accidents that were attributable to badly maintained and budget tyres to want to take the risk with anything else.

I searched all the major tyre suppliers for prices before buying my new Goodyears and found the best deal on line with Asda. One visit to the website to order is all it takes, you select one of their allied fitters near you and they take care of the rest with no money up front, you pay the tyre depot when fitted. I have never used Asda before but will certainly look at them again should I need to replace tyres.

Thanks Whitewagon for your carefully thought out response which is interesting-I will give the Goodyears tyres some thought.

Bear in mind that the EU tyre labelling measurement for noise is a measurement of external noise, and may not be wholly representative of noise transmitted to the inside of a car's cabin.

I have Falken ZE914's fitted to my Avensis 2009 Tourer and i'm quite happy with them, they are gennerally quite quiet, but can be a bit noise on some parts of the road. it depends on the surface of the road. The main route i take to work has a mix of smooth tarmac, rough tarmac, and concrete.

on the really smooth tarmac the external noise is virtually non-exsistant, just a bit of wind noise from the mirrors, on the rougher parts of the tarmac you can hear the tyres, and its the same on the concrete. its maybe a bit more pronounced on the concrete. but over all i'm happy with the tyres.

I went to them after having pirrelli P7's on the car. that was what the dealer fitted when i got the car, and i F.......g hate pirrelli's worst tyre ever used invented. no grip in the wet and no confidence in the corners and the wear rate is dreadful.

The Falkens have been on the car for 7 months and i average 1200 to 1400 miles a month, and they have only worn about 3mm on the front and 2mm on the rear. so cant complain their. They have a wear marker on the outer edges of the tyre to show when you need to rotate them. Mine will be getting rotated in the next few weeks.

I'm not impressed with the efficient grips on my '12 plated tourer diesel. I've just fitted a pair of GY excellence on the rear and it does seem to have quietened things down a bit although on rougher sections of roads the car is still noisy, the difference between rough and smooth sections of motorway is more noticeable than anything I've ever driven. The front pair will need replacing in 3k or so & I'm going back to Continentals. Have to say I'm disappointed with the Avensis especially when it comes to road noise and rattles.
