Rav4 With Cvt Box

Hello all, just joined.

I'm looking to buy a Rav4 with the cvt box, I think they were only produced between 2008-2010? There's not many around thats for sure. Can anyone who owns one confirm if the mpg is as good as shown by toyota? Most of my driving is in town so with their figure of urban 29mpg I guess I'll get closer to 23-24 in the real world but thats no worse than the Bmw 118i I currently drive.

I recently test drove a Qashqai wuth a cvt box but it seemed really sluggish, though I think thats more to do with the Nissan engine than anything else. Had an auto Avensis 10 years ago and loved how that drove, and I've always liked the styling of the Rav so really hoping to get one soonish.

If you are concerned about economy, I can tell you that there are loads of unhappy people on the quasqai owners club regarding the economy of the QQ 4WD + CVT ( at least last time I was on there in 2010/2011 when I had a QQ (not 4WD and not CVT ;) )

All the fuel figures right across the Rav range are optimistic to say the least.. I have no idea how pretty much every car from every manufacturer can be so far out. Always optimistic !

If I'm honest I would not buy a CVT equipped car from any manufacturer as the complexity of ECUs and electronics are just to much of a risk factor and if they play up in can cost a fortune..

The more usual torque converter six speed automatic box found in the Rav4 is a gem and very reliable indeed without all that electrical kit to go wrong... Only fly in the ointment is the fuel figures are way lower than the usual claimed and optimistic ones...

Recently did a megaclean of an Auris with CVT Gearbox........good grief......start car.....select drive......press accelerator.......put kettle on and await result. Then found a wee button that improved response a bit, but if that is indicative of the system in Toyotas, it is very poor compared to the normal torque convertor automatic I can wax lyrical about.

Honestly do not see the point of it ......?

The button in the end of the handbrake Kev ? I haven't driven a CVT Rav but must agree the conventional auto boxes are sublime.

Thanks fot the replies, that's a big no for the CVT then lol. Fair enough though its good to know before buying one. The 'normal' autos are cheaper to buy and I only do about 5k miles a year anyway, just I can't see me getting more than around 20mpg with a heavy right foot driving down south London's narrow streets. If I get some fun out off it though I guess its not all bad.

You'll love driving a RAV in London. The 4.3 has a footprint just slightly smaller than a Focus, you'll have the elevated driving position, road presence and good manoeuvrability.

On the subject of fuel consumption............................. manufacturers published figures bear little relationship to actual achieved consumptions. The manufacturers figures are obtained under defined laboratory conditions on a rolling road and these figures must be quoted in brochures and on websites. Manufacturers are not allowed to publish any other consumption figures but you may find more realistic figures published in the motoring press. A recent study indicated that on average - manufacturers consumption figures are around 21% less than achieved in practice. This compares to a figure of about 8% back in 2001. Sceptics point out that the deterioration coincides with the introduction of penalties for manufacturers failing to meet consumption / emissions targets. Bottom line is that manufacturers data can only be used as a rough guide for comparison of cars - more realistic figures for particular models can be found on sites such as this one.

My T180 does 50 MPG... Just like the ones on eBay... Honest easy 50 to a gallon they do... 12 Pints in one of them gallons mind......

Oh and I agree with Gareth's points above.. Where I come from we call the manufacturer's figures horse $hit though

My auto has done over 35 on a run out today - mixed driving but about 60% motorway - 75mph.

35 no a run sounds good, it's the round town stuck in traffic driving I'm worried about, I'm only getting 24 in my bmw 118. Whatever happened to cheap petrol eh.

If it's a petrol 118 - owners complain of less than 20mpg if you drive it a bit lively!

I'm only currently getting 30.4 mpg on my 2011 D-Cat diesel auto. I have a Lindop Chip Kit fitted and have been using BP Ultimate Diesel hoping that this would help improve my mpg. But no luck yet. If the mpg drops below 30mpg, I will be taking it to Mr T for an explanation !!

I do a mixture of motorway and A road driving and the figures above or proper brim to brim calculations, forget the so called digital dash mpg gauge, its crap and has always stated 33.8 mpg without really adjusting !!!

Just did a brimmy test this week, Bobby...........34.9 to be exact, but that included a good run up to That Dundeeshire, but that and the rest of the test was in very mixed journey lengths and freezing cauld temperatures mate. THAT IS A 10% INCREASE on what I was getting in warmer temps without the Kingo Chip, and also having a wee blast with it now and then when out masellf......one must.....

You still wearing they boots you got in yer last joab, min? LOL

To be honest, I have not done a proper motorway journey yet and I can't wait to see the results.

I'm off up to Derby soon for a pre Xmas drinkies session with my ex Army mates.

In regards to my army foot sloggers, they went in the bin when I was released from the army reserves when I hit 44, they obviously think once you reach 44, you're past your best by date...I beg to differ !!

Hi P, welcome to the nut house! :laughing:

The chaps are quite right re published mpg's; their only purpose is to allow you to compare one car against another. real world consumption is always less. Have a look at Honest John's website where he has started compiling a data base of actual mpg's for an increasing number of vehicles.

I'd agree that traditional torque converter auto boxes are generally preferable to CVT's. We've had 4.2 petrol autos and now have a 4.3 DCat auto and they have all been excellent performers. The fuel consumption on the 4.2's varied between 25 & 33 for a 5-dr and a 3-dr respectively. The diesel is currently doing 31 in mixed driving but I have seen 38 on a M-way & A-road run.

I recently test drove a petrol RAV with the CVT box & I was impressed insofar as it was impossible to tell the difference with our TC boxes. I can't comment on the mpg though. I would recommend that you take an extended test drive in one and make your own mind up.

You are correct about the petrol autos being scarce but for your low annual mileage a petrol engine will be a better bet than diesel, especially the modern ones that are dripping with complicated, expensive kit in an attempt to keep them clean. If you aren't doing regular longish runs you'll have all sorts of fun & expense with a modern diesel.

I'm up to 70mpg now thanks Bobby, mind you I have to go out every night gone midnight and lie under a white Rav down the road from me and fill up my jerry can with BP Ultimate .........
