Gen 3 Prius Boot Suitable For Labrador

Exactly what it says on the tin really...

We have a Labrador and I'm trying to think ahead for our next family car. I'd like to know if the boot of a gen 3 Prius is big and deep enough for a Labrador? I know we could go for the auris touring or even a Prius+ but really want to own a Prius in my lifetime.

It'd be great if any dog owning Prius owners could share their thoughts with me.

Thanks in anticipation

That's one special dog if it can drive...

Seriously I hope this helps, I was able to fit four full size suitcases on a recent family visit.

There were 3 full size ones, about 27", and one slightly bigger.

It was a tight fit and I had to close the rear hatch with more force than normal to make sure it latched, but it did fit

I know the Gen 3 has a spec 455 Ltr cargo

To be honest with you, probably not unless you've a puppy.

The Prius boot is 460 litres and could be deepened if you took the floor/lid out, but then it would be slippery plastic and no good for a dog. Your dog would have trouble turning around if it's full grown and the boot lid is a little low. I suppose it depends on what car you have now and how far you take your dog. If it's just 5 mins down the road for a walk, then you might be ok.

All in all, probably borderline.

Might be other factors to consider here - rear seat backs up or down, other luggage to include, how long a journey etc.? But at a guess I would say yes.

Our daughter has a labrador and it will fit into the space remaining in her Kia Carens after all the other 7 seats are occupied. She has some kind of belt/strap contraption to ensure the (lively!) dog can't move about too much. She lives 1 hour away from me and happily makes the journey fully loaded.

If you had posed the question last week I could have tested it out for you as we visited them in our Prius on Saturday. Next visit not expected until Xmas, but happy to try if you can wait 'til then.

That'd be great if you could, thank you.

Thanks for the other replies to date too. He is currently a 5 month old pup and we're using the auris boot with seats up and dog guard in place. I suspected it might be touch and go with the Prius, so a real life test would be great.

It depends on the dog. If it likes to lie down no problem. If it wants to jump around, it might not work. The rear door is a hatchback rather than an estate so the headroom is restricted at the rear.

I often have two dogs and some luggage in the back but the dogs are a Westie and a Cairn so the headroom isn't a problem. The Prius has a nice flat floor and cargo hooks to which you can clip leads. The boot liner is great for those wet muddy walks.

Sorry, but wasn't able to check this physically (at this time) for various reasons.

However, as previous poster suggested, the dog would definitely need to stay lying down due to headroom limitations. My daughters' dog doesn't like car travel one bit, and hardly moves at all during a 1 hour trip, allbeit being strapped in securely. A longer journey would require a comfort stop for him to stretch his legs etc..
