Avensis 2.2D T3S - Fuel Gauge And Mpg?

1. Are there any known issues with the fuel gauge on this model - 07 plate? Mine goes slowly to half way and then plummets over 100 miles to reserve. Very difficult to trust.

2. MPG - I am getting 42 mpg over a mix of town and A Road etc. Having just got the car I am slightly concerned expecting more. All the usual things done, service, tyre pressures, millers diesel . is there anything else known to affect mpg for this car.

Stunningly grateful for any advice

This is seemingly an odd issue with the fuel gauges on all Toyota models to varying degrees. Please search this site for the many posts that cover this issue. I think the easiest way of knowing what is left is to do a couple of brim to brim tests so that you can best judge how low you can go before the need to refuel.

There are two Diesel engines that give different rates of consumption. Presuming yours is the 2litre engine it seems a little lower, but not much, than can be expected. See this site for the best real world figures http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/toyota/avensis-2003

Cold weather reduces the figures slightly but driving style is usually the main factor given that everything else is working correctly.

Actually 3, 2 2.2s (150 & 177 BHP) & the 2.0. The OP's car should be the 150BHP.

When I had a 2007 2.2 150BHP Tourer I averaged ~42MPG in the Winter & around 45MPG in the Summer. Long mainly motorway runs could hit middle 50's though.

I would expect a saloon/hb to get slightly more than a Tourer but obviously the precise road mix & driving style would probably have a bigger effect.
