Possible Wiring Fault.

My son has a 59 plate IQ1 & the other morning he called to say that on his way to the bus the headlights & trip computer on the dash started flickering & that there was a burning smell.

When I got to the car & lifted the bonnet there was a rotten egg, sulphur type of smell but no signs of any problem with overheated wiring, fuses, relays etc. I came across a similar problem with a Ford Transit that has a "smart cable" to the alternator & if it corrodes/breaks the alternator just runs riot & overcharges the Battery causing weird electrical problems & sulphur smell.

I checked the Battery charging voltage which was normal & took it for a drive, both low & high revs, with all electrical systems turned on & off but couldn't replicate it.

I was just wondering if anyone else had had a similar experience?

If you notice a smell that is similar to rotten eggs, this indicates that there may something is wrong with the catalytic converter.

Notice a smell that is similar to sulphur, Look for oil stains under the car.

If oil stains are present, this may indicate a leak in the vehicle's transfer case or differential housing.

It wasn't a cat type of smell, similar but much more intense if that makes sense & there are no oil leaks that I can see.

It might well be a wiring fault and you need to find what it is.

4 year old cars and the first in the UK might start to show any faults,

that is what can happen with any new design, the manufacturers can and will not know what can occur until it does.

Possibly a regulator is faulty and the Battery is being over charged.

Best not put off getting professional advice,

Toyota UK, An Email to them.

Then a Toyota Dealership,

which might be a waste of time, but at least enquire with them, even if not letting them do any work.

Enquire with the Workshop & a Technician, not the Service Desk Receptionist..

An Auto Electrician might be of more practical assistance.

Can only give you my experience of my Battery dying on my 59 plate. On idle, the headlights would flicker and so did the dash which you could perceive out of the corner of your eye but not if you looked directly at it. As soon as the revs were increased all was well. Later, it would struggle to start. No burning smell but batteries are strange items
