New Radiator For 99/00 Rav - Correct Replacement?

Hi there

Our 1999 built import Rav (registered in the UK in 2000) has a leaking radiator. We've been quoted 500 euros to replace by local garage in France where boyfriend is currently working.

That seemed a bit steep so we're looking for replacements elsewhere. Found this one on eBay but seller was vague as to whether his would fit our rav. This is the item number 200864952756.

I'm not sure what other info to give you, its a 2 litre engine and the variant given on the item page is SXA1. We don't need fans, just radiator. Have attached a photo showing our engine number. Apologies its a little blurry, unable to take another as I'm not in France at the moment.

Many thanks!

Julie

Hi Julie,is your Rav an auto as this may be one for that model?

Got to agree that the garage price seems high. foreigner rates maybe.

Suggest you get another quote and see how they compare

Is it a bad leak? Would a rad sealing product get you out of trouble in the short term?

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, ours is an auto. There is another garage (a Brit mechanic) but he's booked up well into the new year. The quote we had from the French garage was 150 euro labour the rest, radiator price. He's agreed to just fit any radiator we find for the labour charge only so we may end up going to him to fit it.

I don't know about sealing products, I'll ask my other half when I speak to him later. Thanks

I presume that this car was imported from Japan? If so - the radiator you propose will fit with slight modification - otherwise it should be reasonably easy to get your old unit re-cored in France - it's a common core size. I'm presuming your Rav is automatic - the eBay item you mention is for an auto.

Just a reminder Julie the more info you can add to your profile the easier it would be for members to help you.

Can't be sure but I think yours is a mark one model.

The year 2000 the model was changed hence the confusion and if you look at the photos on here it may help to determine your model. On the Mk 1 the plastic protecters covered about half the door and on the Mk2 they are much smaller

Rad sealant is an additive that is placed in the rad water and can seal the leak as it solidifies on contact with the air if it is not too bad

Hope this helps you

Meant to say that the labour rate probably includes removing the aircon radiator which is attached to the front of the engine radiator. This would entail recharging the aircon. It is possible to remove the radiator leaving the fan / cowl and the aircon radiator in the car. This car is a 4.1 (SXA1 on the VIN plate)

Hi

I think ours is a Mk1. But its got a slightly different body kit than we've ever seen on older ravs so I'm sure. Yes, it was a Japanese import. Ours was built in 99 according to the paperwork but have attached some photos. I will make it a priority to update my profile!

Photos aren't too clear but they're only old holiday snaps.

Thanks

The car is a 4.1 model with 5 doors unfortunately haha. Looks nice condition.

The radiator can be changed very quickly, although I can't comment on the aircon bit as I don't have that. However, I do have a second radiator up front for the intercooler radiator.

A tall thin mechanic will be able to work more quickly! (gettings arms and fingers down to undo things).

If I remember right, the second radiator fitted in mine is one from a Fiat and the other car has one from a Clio. So theres a little bit of room up front - not a lot.
