Which Engine Have I Got?

Recommended Posts

Hey Gang

Sorry to sound like a fool and keep asking questions (Bet your ****** off with me already :help:

Which model engine does my car have in it?

It is a Toyota MR2 2.0l 16v Jap Import - 1991 - H Reg

3S-FE @ 121bhp

or

3S-GE @ 173bhp

It certianlly feels a LOT faster than 121bhp tho.

I take it is a revision 1 too? or is it revision 2?

Thanks again gang

Revision 1 ...

does it have a rear spoiler ?

Posted

Is it a G-LTD , GT COUPE or GT T-BAR?? If so its most likely 158 ish. Check out the buyers guide on the TECHNICAL section of the IMOC site http://www.imoc.co.uk

Posted

It has a rear spolier, it`s G-Limited and it revs to 9000 and redlines at 7000

They didn't release the 3SFE in japland.... so its definatly the 3SGE.

Posted

it'll be a 3s-ge as the 3s-fe was a UK thing ..

and the Rev1's were 154 bhp .. the 173 is the rev3's with the gen3 3s-ge (where you have the gen2 engine)

whats the difference between a gt t-bar and a g-limited?

Posted

gt t-bar has removable roofs and more toys such as folding in mirrors, a/c, leather seats and steering fog-lights

Posted

A Proper "GT-T-bar" is the top-of-the-line .. turbo, T-bar all the toys

a "G-Limited" is the second step up, "G" being the most basic. Both are NA, has non-steering fogs etc .. (the G didn't have fogs).

A UK car is a GTi 16 .. but this is often shortened to GT ..

ok, but my car is a N/A t-bar and it has air con, climate control, folding mirrors, steering fog lights, power steering and whatever other little toys you could want, the only thing it hasn't got is a turbo! when i bought it iwas told it's a 1990 g-limited but the logbook says it's GT.:wacko:

is it an import or UK? if its an import then its definately a GT, if its a UK then all those extras were options n youre car would be a UK Gti-16 or a UK GT. Either way its a GT :D

it's an import

so i'm a gt-tbar then not g-limited?

so i'm a gt-tbar then not g-limited?

g-limited is the standard jap name for the uk variant gti-16 valve.

the limited name came from the fact that it isnt a turbo,...ie the gt spec but limited in final spec and perfomance.

not a dig at n/a peeps, this is honestly what i have read many times.

I always thought the Limited was because it had a speed limiter on it... Oh well, learn something new every day!

Right.

A GT-T-bar is a UK car. N/A with the T-Bar - like Nicola's.

A GT can be: UK car - N/A without the T-bar and will have Tintop or Moonroof. In Import variety, it will be a Tubby (Not sure about roof and extras options)

Jez, looking at your car (in your avatar) - you have a UK GT-T-Bar (Rev1 or 2 not sure). It's not an import.

N/A's: Rev1 & 2's 3S-GE - 158bhp. Slightly more torque lower down the rev range. Red-lines at 7150rpm. G-ltd are often limited to 100mph (Jap regs). Rev1's - very bad handling due to brakes, suspention and wheel diameters, Rev2's slightly improved due to increased wheel diameter (15") Suspension also slightly improved.

Rev3-5 3S-GE - 173bhp. Red-lines @ 7300rpm to give extra bhp. G-ltd limited as above. Handling problems much imporved, suspension overhauled and car lowered. ABS as standard. All trims body coloured. Nicer rear lights and one-piece spoiler. Can't remember the cosmetic changes to Rev4's. Rev 5's adjustable spoiler and different 15" alloys.

Final Rev5's fitted with the 200bhp Beams engine.

There was also a limited (anaversery) edition Rev4 with red stitching on gear knob and steering, it also had stainless kick-plates and a plaque.

Mine is a Rev 1 i think (maybe Rev 2) Jap Import

Mine goes faster than 100mph :D

Handling is good also, sticks to the road like glue

Spot on what System~G said above.

There's too much confusion about the UK GT (NA) and the Jap GT (Turbo)!!!

Although I'd like to add to what G said, the bhp dropped from the rev4 (I'm think rev4, certainly rev5) to 168bhp. Also, cosmetic changes to the rev4 were the clear corners at the front (sidelights). "Final rev5s with BEAMS VVTi engine" - this was for Jap NA's only - the UK got the standard 3S-GE :(

Here's probably the best site I've seen for all the revision differences:

It probably sayd "GT" on the log book as that's what the UK car was abreviated to.

Jap cars :

G : very basic, no options.

G-Limited : Normal NA (most options)

GT-S : Basic Turbo (most options)

GT : All singing, all dancing turbo.

All the above were either tin top or T-bar

UK cars :

Coupe : FE engined, only Rev1, usualy no fogs or spoiler.

GTi 16 : Often called the "GT".

Above are both NA, either moon roof'ed or T-bar'ed ..

i guess mines the 121bhp one then...

n/a sport 2ltr 16v rev 1. 1990 H reg. Uk spec.

Easiest way to find out is to look at the engine .. on the timing belt cover ..

It'll either have 3S-FE written on (120odd BHP)

3S-GE (150odd to 170odd BHP - bit more if tuned)

3S-GTE (220-240 BHP stock)

If you have Beams written on the top .. you are a lucky Jap spec Rev5 NA owner ..

anything else .. it's either a US car or you had an engine swap ..

I'm sure I've seen some UK Tin-tops at meets too  Could be wrong tho.

I'm 99% sure my car is an import, it has jap writing inside. have a look at this pic
