Avensis 1.8 1Zz-Fe Auto No Forward Power P0500.

Hello Guys

Ran into a problem today. Whilst driving the car I lost all power and the engine just revved as if the auto transmission wasn't engaging any gear.

The check engine light came on and returned the code p0500 when scanned. This suggested that there is a faulty speed sensor.

Currently the cars reverse gear functions just fine. In drive there is no forward power and the engine just revs when i give it throttle. Every 1 in 20 times when I put it in drive I do get power for a few seconds and It moves forward.

When I was towing the car home the speedo was giving an accurate speed reading the entire way home.

I am baffled why what could be wrong here. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas on where to start? Your help would be much appreciated :D Thanks!

Change the speed sensor?

So I'm guessing that the speed sensor provides an input to the gearbox? If it has failed it isn't providing a signal and consequently the gearbox doesn't know what to do. Guesswork only mind, I have no auto box training.
