The AD series of diesel engines have an early history of head gasket failure/heavy oil consumption.

See the Honest John Good & Bad section of the Corolla Verso review - http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/toyota/corolla-verso-2004/?section=good

This highlights that some of the VVTi engines can display heavy oil consumption after 40,000 miles - but this doesn't mean that all will.

As you are aware the 1.6 & 1.8 vvti engine where only fixed from late 2005 onwards, so oil consumption may be an issue, look for history of an engine repair including a short motor and you should be fine.

2004 > 2005 2.0 1CD diesels are good strong engines just make sure the cambelt was changed at 5yr/60k

2005> 2.2 2AD engine can suffer head gasket/oil consumption issues, look for history of an engine repair including pistons/short motor and you should be fine.

That's because there is no such thing, Toyota switched from fitting modified ( not bigger ) pistons to fitting short motors to the affected cars a long time ago.

The chassis number you posted is before the fix so could potentially suffer from the oil consumption issues on the Verso you need the last 5 of the chassis number to be higher than 54936
