Rear Washer And N/s Window - Mot Failures?

Hi All,

I have a 1999, 3 door, 1.0 petrol Yaris which I got in the summer last year. The first MoT looms. The rear wash squirt doesn't work - I can hear the pump trying to pump when I operate it. The washer bottle is full and the front ones work OK. Any thoughts? The Haynes manual says I need to remove the front bumper and the o/s headlight to get at it - is this true?

Will it fail the MoT on the rear washer not working?

Also the electric window on the passenger door doesn't work. It was OK at some point last year. Again any advice and is this an MoT failure?

Thanks in advance.

I think only the front windscreen washer is an MOT item. Have you tried carefully clearing the washer jet with a needle or pin?

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the reply - I also thought it was just the front that is an Mot item so hopefully we're both right. I did try cleaning with a pin but it didn't make any difference. Its really a question of how much effort I spend to fix it, if it isn't an MoT item. I can live with it not working!

The other thing you could check is whether the hose leading to the washer jet has water in or whether that could be blocked. Quite often a union in the hose where the hose goes from the bodyshell into the tailgate.

This is what they check:

Washers and wipers

◾Operation

◾Extent of area swept by the wipers

◾Condition of the Wiper Blades

Reasons for Rejection

Wipers and Washers

a. A wiper or washer control missing or inaccessible to the driver

b. a wiper does not continue to operate automatically when switched on

c. a wiper installed for the use of the driver does not operate over an area of the windscreen large enough to give the driver an adequate view of the road (through the windscreen) to the left and right sides of the vehicle, as well as to the front.

A wiper blade insecure, missing, or in such a condition that it does not clear the windscreen effectively to give the driver an adequate view of the road (through the windscreen) to the left and right sides of the vehicle, as well as to the front.

The windscreen washers do not provide enough liquid to clear the windscreen in conjunction with the wiper(s).

Thanks for the info Raistlin - your post only mentions "windscreen" - do you know, does this just mean the front? - or the front and the back?

Windscreen is usually defined as the front window.

Also at point c) the rear view is not mentioned.

Thanks guys - I won't waste too much time trying to fix the rear washer.

Any thoughts on whether the front passenger window not working is an MoT failure? My understanding is that the doors have to open/close but I don't know if the same applies to the windows. I suspect they don't have to work but would like confirmation if anyone knows.

Yeah, they don't check the back, at least not yet!

Only hatchbacks have rear-wipers and jets anyway so it'd be a bit daft if it became an MOT item since all saloons would fail

The rear jet is a bit of a pain on the Yaris as it is connected to the same reservoir as the fronts, via a long tube which is prone to getting dried/blocked if the jet is hardly ever used. On my first Yaris I had this problem, but held the jet on for, like, 5 minutes and eventually some fluid started to trickle out.

If that doesn't work, I'm not sure how to get at the tube but I suspect it'd be more trouble than it's worth...

The electric window could a a dodgy fuse, a dodgy switch or the window has come out of its guides and has jammed or fried the motor (Unlikely if it is already up tho'). I'd check the fuse first and go from there...

Not necessarily. Some items are required to work if fitted. Fog-lights (front) is an obvious common example.

Re the passenger electric window.......Have you checked that the button that isolates the passenger window winder (located just forward of the drivers window switches) has not been accidentally pressed

This switch is a press/press switch and can be identified by the orange band that shows when in the off position

Thanks Red Yaris 54. You were correct concerning the isolation switch for the passenger window. How embarrasing! That'll teach me to investigate properly before posting next time. Anyway all OK now - and just passed the MOT with no problems (well just a few bits of 'advice') this morning.
