Check Battery/check Engine Warnings

Hi Guys,

I thought I would try and seek some help here to what seems to be quite an odd fault. My Girlfriends Auris 1.4D the other night had a bit of a flip out, check Battery came up first, then check engine, all the of dials went dark, power steering pump stopped and a host of warning lights on the dash. Pulled over, stopped and restarted, and everything seems to work again fine. No odd noises issues... all fine, but the Check Battery then Check Engine warnings persisted. Been away for the weekend and now come back to try and figure out whats going on, checked the Battery and that looks fine, cleaned up the terminals a bit, but not much, and all we have left now is the Check Battery warning, Engine seems to have forgotten it needed checking.

I have a few ideas....

1. Even though the battery shows up as fine, it could be on the way out? And some of the systems are not being powered properly?

2. All the weather we have been having properly, the alternator belt is not gripping properly and the battery is not getting the juice it needs?

3. The alternator is knackered?

The only other thing that remains on is the Fuel Filter warning light, considering it was serviced by Toyota Southampton about 3 weeks ago, I would have assumed they would have replaced the fuel filter.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tom

So you have put a multimeter across the Battery without the car running, you should have around 12.4 volts. With the car running you should get around 13-14 v max coming out of the alternator (just put a multimeter across the Battery with the car running on volt reading!). If the fuel filter light has come back on after the service, take it back to the stealers and tell them that it has come back on. however, under a service they wont change the fuel filter if the light wasnt on when you took it in, (my experience anyway)

when my alternator gave up, Battery and diesel filter light illuminated.

My alternator didn't fully fail, it was still charging but failing - nasty smell, a noise and output was lower than normal.

First port of call is the alternator. This will throw up the fuel light when it dies.
