by the switch I mean the one at the stalk behind the steering wheel (the one you use to switch the wiper on and off).

if you do need a wiper motor and decide to buy a used one which are £25.00 of eBay, make sure its from the same shape as yours ie hatcback, saloon or estate.

I noticed they are different when I was looking for one, might be worth while jotting down the part number whilst you have it out.

Toyota wanted in the excess of £150+ for a new one,

Hi Pete,

I have just looked at my own wiper motor which was misbehaving.

Look at this post if not done so already.

http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/155259-2002-avensis-18-vvti-rear-wiper-will-not-turn-off/?p=1312450

I posted a few pictures so you have a reference. I removed the silver cover from the motor for the repair, but this should give you the general idea.

I had this problem on my Avensis Estate. Went online to a Used Car Spares Site, gave them the details and received several quotes for a used part with guarantee for £50.00. I have the Haynes Manual and fitting it was easy.

My rear wiper is now working and I did nothing!

However shortly after I made the wiper problem post the car the developed a hazard warning light problem, insofar that they came on of there own accord and couldn't be turned off, so I took the fuse out.

Problem solved but no hazards or indicators working when unlocking or locking the car with the key fob.

I looked on the forum and found that the dome light can sometimes cause unrelated problems, I then noticed the dome light was flickering so I replaced the fuse, dome light now working okay and rear wiper working as well, whether the wiper working is related to the fuse I don't know!

How can I get the flashers working properly please when I put the fuse back in?

Another thing, I can't find the fuse for the heated rear window.

The fuse for the rear window heater is number 18 in the Avensis handbook. Top row approx 4 in from the right.

The wiper is not working again so I have taken the motor apart as previous posts, I have cleaned/dressed the contacts and cleaned the surface strips they bear upon, should the contact surfaces be greased or left dry?

There is plenty of nice clean grease in the housing, could I use this?

Thanks Pete

Hi Pete,

I did use some of the grease found in the motor, so yes.

My fix was not successful, as the fault is still there. What I do now is switch to standard wiper then switch off. It seem to park straight away most of the time.

I notice that after using standard mode for nearly a minute, I can use intermittent mode with less issues.

I will look at the motor again later, but for now it is not a problem.

The question now is, getting a secondhand motor that is guaranteed not to have the same problem!

Here is another test, lift the wiper into 'up' position, then try intermittent mode. It then behaves itself mostly when there is no friction. When the motor is more troublesome, it will misbehave all the time. Unfortunately the relay is built into the motor so cannot be exchanged.

I also noticed from the Haynes wiring diagram, the two wire feeds between the switch and the motor, intermittent and continuous.

I have a thought. Check the earthing, but I think it is the relay itself. Both the rear wiper and heater share that earthing point. It is located in the rear left-hand quarter panel.

Hi Konrad

Thanks for all the extra info, I'll bear it all in mind when I put the motor back.
