Serious Brake Problems

Hi

i'm new here. I first had a look around, but couldn'r find an answer.
I own a Auris 2.0 D4D, 2008 LH drive.(Belgium)
About 3 weks ago, i changed all brake pads. Front and rear. I'm not a mechanic, but done this several times. On the rear i used the rewind tool. RH side = left threaded. So i thought i knew it all.

Piston all went in very smoothly.

The problem : Whit the engine running, and i push the pedal hard...it goes to the floor !!

What i already did:

-Bleeded the system with 2 persons.

-Bleeded it with a proffesional bleeding tool(under pressure/auto fluid fill)

-New master cilinder ( expensiv and didn't help)

-Checke all calipers (all dry, lifted dust covers)

pads are full "driven in" after about 600 km's.

So now....i don't know what to do anymore. What else can be the cause please??

1 thing i noticed while bleeding the REAR calpiers, is a wierd noice each time i open the bleeder. It's coming from the front. U can hear the fluid "flushing" realy loud.

The oil level does NOT drop in the reservoir. Even after 3 weeks.
Could it be the ABS unit?

I always thought, that if the pedal goes tot the floor, it's air, a broken master cilinder OR a leak. I can't understand where the oil goes to while the pedal goes to the floor.
I hope i posted all the info needed. Oh yes, the car has NO ESP.
Hope you guy's can help me out here
Thanks in advance

Do you ever get a firm pedal after bleeding?

Or does the pedal soften while driving?

Hi

If the engine is NOT running, the pedal stays firm. But with engine running it feels firm, but if you push hard on the pedal it slowly goes to the floor. It's the same while driving. The car stops good, but at a red light, and i keep pushing the pedal, it slowly goes down.

When you changed the pads did you follow the workshop manual ? also have you ever changed pads on this car before?

With some cars you have to disconnect the Battery when changing pads etc.

I am no mechanic but doing stuff on ABS cars can be different between makes of car.

Sorry I can't be of more help,I am old school, none of this ABS malarky when I used to do my servicing :-)

First time i changed them on this car. Called my toyota dealer and asked a mechanic if i needed to do something special. He just told me about the left thread piston on the RH rear side, and to make sure the pin on the inner pads is inline with the pistons gap

I had a quick scan around and it could be that there is damage to the ABS unit (the more I read the more confusing it becomes).

If you can get a workshop manual (Hayes etc) and have a look at that it will tell you a bit more detail.

One bit I read (not toyota) was that you have to undo the bleed valve on the calliper to get the piston back so it would seem there are difference procedures for different types of system.

Word of warning, its the bits the mechanic DIDNT tell you that you have to worry about :-)

I also found that about the bleeder. But at my local toyota dealer they NEVER do that with any toyota model. Never had any problems. ME, i do it....and probably the ABS unit to heaven. Go figure.

I am looking around for a second hand, but there are so many different types....First there's the number on the pump. I can find a second hand with matching number. But there's also the electrical module. Not sure if they are all the same. And the online toyota part lists do no longer show the ABS unit. And with the Bosch number, at Bosch automotive catalog....NO longer available...

A bit too late to answer but for anyone may be of help.

If you experience same problems after brake pads change, and or have a soft pedal it's more likely you have an air locked inside your ABS module you can try this one:

1. Check brake fluid it's up to correct level.

2. Make 2-3 hard brakes with ABS kick in on speeds around 20mph in a safe place and let the abs work properly.

3. Check the fluid level again and top up if necessary.

if you have your pedal harden up and sharper brakes you done, if not you may need to visit your local dealer as they have a scan tool that you need to set correct bleeding of abs module. And if same then you can change the abs unit, but still scan tool is utmost for the job.

Good luck

Interesting problem! I think i would be tempted to bleed the system at as many places as you can at the brake pipe fitting itself. Using a 2nd person get them to push the pedal down, you undo a brake pipe fitting at every place you can find, starting at the master cylinder and working your way to each brake caliper.....so the person pushes the pedal, fluid comes out of your joint, when the 2nd person's foot is on the floor he/she shouts 'down', you lock the fitting back up to stop any air being drawn back in and you may well find at one particular place lots of bubbles coming out quite possibly around the ABS unit area but i think you need to systematically need to bleed the system piece by piece, pipe by pipe and see how it goes, worth a try! Good luck!

Sounds like there's air in the brake lines - Check you didn't accidentally knock/loosen a bleed nipple or hose fitting on one of the brake lines when you changed the pads.
