Tapping Noise From Engine On The Motorway

Hi there,

I bought a 2009 rav4 d4d 2.2 today and on the way home on the motorway the engine started making a tapping noise as I took my foot off the accelerator? I immediately phoned the garage we bought it from and took it back for them to check.

As this is my first Toyota I was not sure how the engine should sound but was told when I took the guy from the garage out in it that they are noisy, which is fine but I just have a funny feeling they were fobbing me off.

Has anyone else heard this tapping sound as you take your foot off the accelerator? Really concerned as this car is for my wife and our son will be in the back most of the time.

I check the oil it it seems fine, I was also told that they have adjustable tap pits? Should I be taking the car back?

Please help

A tapping noise on the over-run is not normal and needs investigating. The tappets can be adjusted but many Rav's end their days without ever needing adjustment - in any event, noisy tappets are most apparent at idle. You don't describe the tapping but it could be something very simple (e.g. a heat shield resting on the exhaust) - nevertheless don't be fobbed off.

..........or an injector out of tolerance? Exactly symptom I got from an Avensis......tapping or cracking on acceleration and abrupt lifting of foot off gas. All 4 replaced.......warranty........£1000.00 they said at the time.
