Iq 3 Exhaust Noise

Hi guys,

2 weeks into owning my IQ 2010 multidrive with 2600 miles on the clock and loving it.

One big question is the exhaust noise. If I look at a Yaris 1.3 4 pot (which I assume has the same engine), it's whisper quiet. However when taking off and revs around the 2000-2500 area I hear a resonating sound like there's a blow on the exhaust. Sounds annoying at times. It disappears at higher revs 3000rpm+ and lower than 1500rpm, but has anyone come across this or a potential fix?

Cheers.

Hi bit early for a sunday morning Ha Ha. I have a custom twin port exhaust so no use to you really, but i am sure some one will pop up and help. I must be near you being in Romford area. Cheers

Sorry I can't help much. Mine is a 1.3 but have a Stainless Steel Powerflow exhaust on for the last 10 months, can't really remembered what it sounded like before. Craggle has a 1.3 as well, so he might be able to help.

Your powerflow sounds good. Can you post a pic? Is it dual or quad tailpipes?

There is not much to see really :(

I got it at Demon Tweeks. They don't do off the shelf for the iQ so custom make them to suit the car, takes a couple of hours, you do get to choose how you want it though and tailpipe style.

It does come with a lifetime guarantee though :)

Looks cool. What sort of noise does yours make compared to oem? Is it a boy racer noise?

No, I didn't want to try and sound like a Scooby or anything like that. I would say it is no louder when cruising at a steady speed. But when you do rev it it does give a nice growl. I would say it sounds like it should have done off the production line, if you get what i mean?

But I could have asked for it louder when they were making it.

I do indeed have a 1.3 iQ with the original exhaust system and I can't say I've noticed anything like you describe.

As your car is a few years old but with so few miles it might be worth looking at the exhaust system to make sure the rubber mounts are still good and moisture inside the pipe hasn't corroded it from the inside. Not sure if there any heat shields under the car as well but they can have a habit of coming loose and vibrating.

As the iQ is so short I would expect the noise levels to be slightly higher than is a bigger car, The length of an exhaust system makes a big difference to the silencing it can achieve.

Craig.

When revving the engine... mine does give a *sound* / *vibration* at 2000 revs.. Very annoying .. always at about 2000 rpm ...

The garage can not find it / ... I mean ...they say its the vibration of my exhaust that's touching the rear-skirt-thing...

I do think that the engine has a vibration at 2000 herz.. when you ref or pull up. So could be that some part(s?) are resonating somewhere... :-/

So maybe have someone looking / hearing behind the exhaust and try to rev from lower than 2000 up to a little over 2000..

See what you can hear..or find...

Good luck...

BTW ... I noticed that the Aygo / C1 or the 107 have a different exhaust system. It's a longer car....but they have an end-exhaust that is perpendicular to the pipe going backwards... Just look at such a car and you can see this ugly exhaust thing popping under the rear fender... very ugly.. but why is it done this way (not that I care ;-) )

That ugly box you are referring to is a silencer and a big one which obviously has a purpose. Similar to what Porsche boxsters have and other vehicles with similar setup. I think Smart cars, which is a close (or not so close) rival to the iq, also has this.

From memory, the iQ has a heat shield on one side of the silencer and it is possible that it is close up against the body and vibrates at a certain rev band. Or rubbers have perished or baffles inside the silencer come loose at one end and vibrate. Doesn't take much for it to resonate throughout the car. The company i mentioned to you before will check it free for you
