My 2009 MMT 1.3 Yaris had been under investigation for three days last week at toyota garage due to its engine malfunction light on. First time I took it to the garage they recommended a complete ECU replacement at £1300 after finding a PO500 error code. So we complained basically and asked them to investigate more thoroughly on the eventual agreement that they give some contribution towards this and mentioning on the side lines I was thinking about a new car. This rattled them enough to do the three days investigation, including a technican actually taking the car home connected to the computer.

Problems I was having was the car not engaging into the right gear particularly in first or sometimes second in auto mode (one particularly scary incident was the fact it actually failed to go forward despite me releasing the handbrake and pressing the accelerator when I was setting off going uphill). Other times in manual mode it won't go up into second gear until trying a second time. It also had an occasional temper tantrum if I tried to move the stick from R to E or M1, would beep and flash neutral, so I had to put it into neutral to let it think about it before trying again (quite embarrassing if you're reversing out of a parking space and someone is waiting for you).
Eventually they found the culprit - a loose wire that was not connected to anything. Not quite sure where it was but so far it seems to have been the culprit causing some of the gear problems as instantly when I drove it away from the garage today its performance is a lot better than it was, with particularly the lower gears being a lot smoother. Tried it out in auto mode around Sainsburys car park whilst I was getting out through the barriers and that seemed much better too.

I will post more updates as I drive around for another month or so but so far so good!
