Hey everyone, I'm Mark.

Just joined the forum as I am in the market for a Auris SR180.

Background is a vehicle technician so was hoping someone would be able to help me out with an pointers I need to specifically look out for when I view the car next week. It's a 58 plate with 44k on the clock.

Look forward to speaking with you all soon!

Welcome Mark :) You should get plenty of response - I'm an SR owner myself. Feel free to ask ......

Thanks guys.

Just want to know if there are any things I need to look out for when looking it over really. Any common issues, weak points etc. I see a lot of people complaining about mpg etc....

The main thing to look out for is covered a million times over in another thread - see '2.2 D4D engine woes' by Charlie.

Basically you need to check the head gasket is healthy by looking at the coolant expansion tank (is it at the right level & only coolant in there - not oil !) and take off the oil cap to check for any milky white gunge (a mix of coolant & oil). If it has either or both of these issues - walk away. A full Toyota service history would almost certainly help too :)

The reason some people mention poor MPG is usually down to short, cold-run commuting (not good for diesels) or those mentioned engine problems. I get over 40 MPG consistently & I don't drive like a granny (no offence !). That's a mix of A & B road travels. No motorways up here !

Thanks for that, header tank looked spotless to be fair but didn't check the oil cap. The weathers not the best for looking at the minute...test drive was good surprised at how smooth it felt. Didn't feel that powerful though. Was expecting a bit more go in it?!

My audi A4 is chipped to 170 and it would blow its socks off.

Yeah there's no doubt at all that a chipped 140 Audi Tdi is going to feel stronger than a standard 180, but that's mainly because Toyota have deliberately restricted the torque available in 1st & 2nd. It helps to prevent damage to the driveline parts & you can feel the difference in pull when you hit 3rd. As far as I'm aware, Audis are not held back in this manner - only the Traction Control intervenes when necessary. But Toyota's is one of the smoothest diesels out there.

Yeah totally agree, it felt so smooth. Diesels have come on a long way! Well I've pretty much made my mind up and going to go for it. It's spotless and seems like a good buy to me. It's having a full service and MOT before I pick it up so hopefully it should all be good. Don't suppose you know if it has an aux cable input in the stereo do you? I forgot to look...it's the sat nav head unit 58 plate car. I'm guessing if not there is a cable I can buy to connect my iPod into?

My '57' plate car doesn't have a connection, but if I remember correctly it was available from 09 onwards. Perhaps someone will correct me on that .....

Good luck with your car, I'm sure you'll enjoy it
