Hello Paul - welcome to Toyota Owners Club.

Major problems with the 1.4 D4D engine are not highlighted in the Honest John review (Good & Bad) - http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/toyota/yaris-2006/?section=good

have you had the car since new?

has it been serviced according to Toyota schedule?

Tbh the 1.4 diesel has a pretty decent reputation but if you make enough of anything (& they'll have made hundreds of thousands if not millions of these engines) there will always be an odd one, just sucks when it's yours. Still, is it worth to you to get it properly inspected ?

Yeah, the early Mk1's had headgasket issues, but they've been more or less bulletproof since then. I can't remember the last time we had someone with a problem with a 1.4 D4D, except where it hadn't been looked after or serviced regularly.

It's particularly important with the D4D's to give them regular oil changes; I'd say at least once a year.

If you leave it too long, it becomes acidic and will start to do bad things to the timing chain, not to mention everything else that the oil lubricates and cools. (But I suppose this is true of all cars!)

If there's blue smoke and knocking, it must be burning oil from somewhere; Turbo or head gasket problem perhaps?

If the coolant has gone a funny non-pinky colour and there is a mayonnaise-like scum, it is very likely the head gasket.

The OP's Yaris appears to be a 2007 model - so a Mark 2.

The OP, though asked, has only provided minimal detail on the car - so it is difficult for members to comment. We don't know whether the car has been regularly serviced, how long the OP has owned the car, etc.

Hi Paul.

This doesn't sound too good mate, if your pockets are deep enough i'd get the car to your local Toyota dealership for a decent and complete appraisal on your engine as it might work out cheaper in the long run.

Despite some peoples impression main dealers are not necessarily the dearest option and whatever job they do you should and will get a solid warranty on their work.

You mention a recon and i read that your car has a turbo well generally a recon will not include the turbo, bear that in mind, a genuine Toyota engine usually will 'come more dressed' and of course they can sort the turbo if needed.

Let us all know what you decide and how you get on.
