Yaris, 2Nd Or 3Rd Gen ?

Hi,

So I've been looking at replacing our 1st Gen T3 with another Yaris. I'm looking to get as new as possible car and while I'd originally decided on a 1.33 TR 5d 2010/2011 model, the prices seem to be quite high locally. I've seen some T-Spirit 2011 models for around £7,500 and now a 3rd Gen 1.33 2012 TR for £8,000

My question is, how much better is the 3rd Gen than the 2nd Gen ? Hopefully we are going to a local dealer just to sound out part-ex for our T3.

Regards,

John

As regards being better, think it partly depends what you view as 'better'.

Both Yaris have gained 5 stars in the Euro NCAP tests, although the tests themselves have been revised since the 2nd generation was launched, so conceivably the 3rd generation is a bit safer than the 2nd.

The 3rd generation has a slightly bigger boot although it lost the sliding rear seats.

The 1.33 also lost the stop-start system - think Toyota said it was too expensive to continue fitting to the Yaris.

The 3rd generation was also Toyota's first application of the Touch & Go system of audio equipment.

The 3rd generation automatic is a CVT, rather than the MMT of the 2nd.

Thanks for the reply. Perhaps 'better' was not the right wording. I suppose what I'm after is knowing if the 3rd gen is an improvement over the 2nd gen and if so, worth stretching the budget for.

I'm undecided over the 'stop-start' thing and thinking it might be better not to have as one less thing to go wrong (the view would be to keep this car 10 years like our current Yaris).

Manual gearbox is the only choice for us.

This is the 3rd gen I've just seen on autotrader http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201401141019751/sort/locasc/usedcars/saved-search-id/2c9218224406a6ed014417b978750021/fuel-type/petrol/keywords/1.33/postcode/ss93bs/price-to/8500/quantity-of-doors/5/make/toyota/transmission/manual/model/yaris/onesearchad/used%2Cnearlynew%2Cnew/radius/1501/page/1/maximum-age/up_to_4_years_old/maximum-mileage/up_to_25000_miles?logcode=p

I suppose if it is definitely a 1.33 you want, and you're uncertain about the long term reliability of the stop/start system, you would be better off going for the 3rd generation. Unless of course a 1.0 litre would do.

Our current Yaris is the 1.0 litre version and while 99% of driving up to last year has been within a 10 mile radius of home, the journeys now are becoming much further afield and would appreciate something of higher performance.

Any owners out there gone from a 1st or 2nd generation Yaris to the 3rd generation and willing to offer their opinions ?

UPDATE

Took the wife to the local dealership as they had both generations on the forecourt. Just on appearance she discarded the 3rd Gen. The salesman opened up a 2nd Gen and she got inside only to say "don't like it!". Eventually we took a 3rd Gen out for a drive and she loved it, the drive, the feel, everything. Spent sometime in the dealership going through figures (inc the part ex of our Yaris) but we couldn't come to a deal.

Yesterday, picked up a 62 Reg 1.33 5DR TR in Silver from Currie Motors in Twickenham for £8,500 (no part ex, just cash deal). Very pleased.

Now I've got to sell the old Yaris!! Anyone interested ?

Copystuff was looking for a Mk 1 Yaris - perhaps a personal message?

Congrats - Waiting to pick up my Yaris from them in a few weeks. Their slogan 'nice people to do business with' is a little bit cheesy, but managed to get a great deal without any nasty tactics or stress. I've had more hassle getting a brochure in an Audi dealership in the past. The free coffee is a bit pants, but if that is my greatest criticism, then I don't really have any criticism at all.

A little bit spooked by their apparent "Dave" only hiring policy. Seriously - Salesman, Finance guy, Sales manager, all called David/Dave. All you would have to do is walk in, shout "Dave", and cause absolute chaos!

David. (yup, me too...)

P.S. Would be interested in your take on the return to the 'standard' instrument gauge. Have always had a strong dislike of the mid-mounted digital readout, but I guess your feelings might be the opposite.

Dave Lazurus was the guy I dealt with initially - I think he's a bit more than just the salesman as the first guy I spoke to was terrible, so I told him to "get me someone with more knowledge". My reason for this was that I wasn't local and therefore making a once only trip with the plan to drive the car home. Once I got to the showroom, nothing was to much trouble. Nice long test drive, which included a trip to the post office for Tax where I was left with the car and the keys!

Couldn't get them to budge on price (it was a cheap car to start with!) not even any freebie likes interior mats, but they did include nearly half a tank of fuel (most dealers give you the car running on fumes!).

I prefer the change in dials, both style and position. Wife has just returned home asking how does she now tell how fast she is going as the speedo isn't very precise! Lord give me strength!

I've got a second gen yaris at the moment, its getting part ex'd for a new Aygo in four weeks. I've driven a 3rd gen as a courtesy car and its lovely, but its too expensive for me to get, so I've gone for the Aygo.

Which I'm sure you'll be happy with. A new car is a new car!

We had a 2nd gen Yaris and an Aygo for a while. We still have the Yaris - Aygo was not a patch on it.

'New' Aygo next year I think - that may be better.

Yeah, unfortunately couldn't wait for the September model change as MOT/tax/service for the Yaris has to be done in April, and I didn't see the point in spending money on it just to run it for another six months. It would have needed two new summer tyres plus pads.
