Hi Tim and a big welcome to the club.

There has been many posts on gear changing probs that have been caused by a malfunction in the ECU.

If you search for a company called ECU Testing in Derbyshire it may be worth giving them a bell.

There have been glowing report of this place from members on the RAV4 forum so maybe a search on there under "harsh gear changes" will help

If you do ring ECUT get the number on your ECU as they will be able to tell you if they can help.

On the rav section there are warnings that inaction can wreck the transmission.

There is a discount from there for club members if you cite the code DON.

Hope this is of help to you.Come back if I can help you more

Firstly have you checked the fluid level in the gearbox? Assuming you have then the best bet is to get it to an auto specialist. They will usually do a few tests, for a reasonable fee, and let you know the best course of action. I dont know what type of box it is but assuming it to be a conventional auto it could be the fluid flywheel has lost its oil, although this will mean removing the gearbox to replace it it will be cheaper than having to replace the gearbox. If it needs a new box then it may mean it is cheaper to scrap it. Most garages won't have the skill or equipment for testing, they will just send it to a specialist and add their fee, hence best to straight to the ones that know.
