Advice For A 2008 Auris, 1.4 Petrol

I'm looking for some advice on what I should have changed on my 2008 1.4 petrol Auris by now.

Its got 68,000 miles on the clock and not had a proper service since 48,000, other than an oil and filter change and I've changed the air filer in it too.

Before that it only got serviced at a local garage for 2 years so its not been to a toyota dealer since it was 3, maybe 4 years old.

So I'm looking for advice on what I should have changed by now?

Spark plugs?

Engine coolant, it needs a top up as I've noticed its below the low line, 'Ive read about head gasket issues worryingly, is that only on diesels?

Brake fluid?

I've also read something about a belt that should be swapped but elsewhere Ive read it has a timing chain.

I was thinking about booking it in for the full service with a dealer just to check everything but unfortunatly it needs a MOT by the end of the month

Thanks for your help and advice.

So how long ago was the car at 48,000?

The car is six years old. The service intervals are either 12 months or 10,000 miles , whichever comes first (intermediate at 1 year/10,000 miles, major at 2 years/20000 miles, and so forth).

You mentioned servicing up to 48,000 miles - was the 48000 mile service an intermediate or major?

It doesn't have to have been serviced by a Toyota dealer - presumably the local garage carried out two years worth of servicing.

I would say at the very least it is due a major service plus possibly a brake fluid change.

I'd also ask for an assessment of the brake pad wear.

The coolant looks OK.

What about the MOT - does it have a current MOT?

It was at 48,000 last year, feb when it got its last MOT, but as I was moving house it wasnt serviced, last time it got a service was probably around the 40k mark. When it was last service it was just a standard garage service from a local garage so I'd say it was nearer a intermediate service.

I have had squealing on the pad and had them cleaned up, at the time I was advised the rear would need chaning soon, they have been changed in the last few months.

The MOT is current until the end of the month. so another 15ish days.

I'll probably stick it into the dealer, assuming it passes its MOT for a full service it also needs the recall on the electric window switches done too.

You can get an MOT done up to 30 calendar days before expiry (just inform whoever does the MOT that you want the MOT dated from the expiry of the current one) - why not get the service and MOT done together?

That would probably be the sensible thing to do, but given it got an oil and filter change at 62,000 Id rather wait till 70k. More importantly I'm skint and cant afford it all at once

It failed the MOT, on a 3.7.A.7, says the parking breaking is only at 15%. I recently had the rear pads changed and although the calipers were siezed they seemed fine after I cleaned them up.

Does anyone know what the pass rate is?

Extract from MOT testing forums:

"The brake efficiency is worked out by dividing the braking force into the weight of the vehicle. This will give you the % braking against gravity, (Gravity being 100%).

The parking brake pass for a dual circuit braking system is 16%, this in effect would mean that the car will hold on a 1 in 6 hill.
The pass for a service (foot) brake is 50% which means it would hold on a 1 in 1 (45deg) slope. 100% means it would hold on vertical wall."

1% out!, I suspect that could easily be donw to how much the tester puts the handbrake on my.

Oh well, while I'm sure a different tester could pass it theres obviously something wrong. I suspect it will be the rear calipers again. The cars only 6 years old and if I change the calipers again this will be set number 3.

I get longer out of a set of tyres.

The calipers were only changed 3 years ago, poor design my toyota, obviously not fit for purpose.

I'll await the garages response on what would fix the handbrake issue.
