2010 1.8 V-Matic Tourer...."ticking" Normal?

I was just wondering if you 1.8 owners have experienced this....a ticking, audible both inside and outside the cabin when idling?

It is just a gentle and regular tick....I thought at first it may be the normal noise of the chain or valves etc, but unsure....normal for this engine/vvti? The car is only on 45k, still under warranty and performing well other than this. I suspect it has been there since I got the car months back, but have only just noticed it as it's not audible above the fan noise.

Thanks again.

I have this too, noticed it not long after purchase 2 years ago. Mentioned it at service time, Toyota checked it out and said all was oK. Not got any worse. As you say only notice at tickover when everything else is quiet.

Thanks for the reply Whitewagon. I will do as you and mention it in passing come service time....but it is reassuring to know that I am not alone.

Your Avensis is white I assume? :) I am enjoying the colour....but find the paint quite prone to chipping....you? Have some painst4u matched paint mixed with clearcoat to have a go at touching some up this week.

Thanks again.

Yes it is white and agree with the paint, modern paints now are water based and definitely not as robust as they used to be, it's not just a Toyota problem as it was the same on two previous Hondas.

Bought some touch up a couple of weeks ago but waiting for a warmer dry day before attempting a touch up.

I also have a 12 plate white 1.8 V-matic tourer and have noticed the ticking sound, and asked toyota about it, and they reassured me that it is normal and nothing to worry about, its a bit more obvious when engine is cold.

Just out of interest, how much mpg are you getting from your wagons? I can barely manage 36mpg

I had been getting a constant 37 to 38 mpg on general driving around which includes some town but mainly A/B roads and motorway. For the past two months though that has fallen to 33 to 34 which has coincided with colder weather and new tyres. I mast say that I consider 38 to be reasonable for a car of its size with an auto box and though no boy racer I don't drive slowly. I had the car last winter too and can't say that I noticed the drop in consumption then so it may be down to the tyres, only time will tell.

Thanks Whitewagon,

i also recently changed the bridgestones to michelin, not winter tyres though, and have noticed a drop from 38mpg to 36mpg. Was planning to drive it to south france in the summer, looks like its going to expensive

My 1.8 VVTi has ticked from cold since I purchased it 3 yr ago. At first I thought it was piston slap but is has not got any worse and does not burn any oil.

On a point of mpg, note that during the winter your lights will be on and use about 3 or 4 mpg.

We are getting about 38mpg at worst....up to around mid 40's at best. My island is quite hilly his does me in a bit....but on the mainland it fares better. That is mostly rural driving with almost no town stuff though.

I changed from Bridgestone to Goodyear Efficientgrip I found the Bridgestones were noisy.

Did a trip to visit friends in France last year. Was about 75% laden and kept up to the speed limits on the French motorways got 40mpg. There are owners who say they get over 40 but I guess they drive very carefully and well below speed limits to get that.

I started to consider downsizing to an Auris but looked at the fuel consumption of 1.6 CVT, it's even lower than the Avensis so not much point in that.

My 2010 1.8 makes a regular ticking noise when idling and has done since I got it. I mentioned it when the car was in for a service but nobody seemed too bothered about it. It never got any worse and the car runs fine.

Thanks everyone for your input so far, I will get my car serviced before the trip to south of France. It's only done 13k miles so far, hopefully the mpg will improve a little bit.
