Door Key / Fob Won't Work On 2000 Plate Toyota Avensis

I have a real problem where none of my three keys will turn in the door barrel. When I pull it it out slightly, it will just spin and not do anything. btw, the electric fob has not worked for years and i have used the key to turn the barrel for a long time now - recently it had become a bit variable and sometimes took several turns of the key to actually open the lock, not sure if this is linked, but probably is.

I am a pretty non techy person when it comes to cars, but basically I now have a car which I cannot get into and is just sitting in my drive, I don't know what to do - HELP PLEASE !!

Thanks

Silly question - does the Battery in the key fob need replacing??

Thanks for the suggestions so far - I did think about phoning my Breakdown Insurance company but haven't done so yet. I did think they migh tell me to swing my hook on this one but I guess a phone call would do no harm.

On the other suggestion about key fob Battery, I have three fobs and none work so don't think that is the case.

Seems to me like it may be something to do with the barrel in the door lock ? Any other thoughts or suggestions appreciated

  • 4 weeks later...

Can't give detailed answer...also having probs with remote fob and its all linked to the dome light (above back seat) which shares same circuit. However the "spinning key" isn't a fault.

From p13 of Owners Manual..." If wrong key is used, the key cylinder rotates freely to isolate mechanism. Thus door locking is protected from thieves."

Hope this helps a little.
