Hi all,

I am going to look at a 2005 Avensis with the the older 1CD-ftv) not sure ? maybe 1AD ? and the 5 speed gearbox.

I am not overly concerned about economy, as I don't do that much distance work.

Is there that much difference economy between the 6 speed geat box, and the 5 speed gearbox?

In view of the very low revs, cruising with the 6 speed box, and it's possible DPF problems, would this be anothe reason to opt for a five speed box?

or even a petrol engine?

I guess I will do 8,000 miles per year, and have £1500 to spend.

If it is a 1AD engine, it may have been affected by the engine issues highlighted in the following: http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/132178-charliefarlies-guide-to-the-toyota-2ad-diesel-engine-and-its-issues/

The pertinent production date for the Avensis is from April 2005. Check to see whether the engine has been replaced - which you should be able to do via a Toyota dealer if you get the VIN.

Earlier upto 2006 2.0 d4d 116bhp is the 1CD cambelted engine is only available with a 5 speed box and no DPF , the later 2.0 d4d 126bhp is the 1AD timing chain engine and has the 6 speed box and was fitted with a DPF from late 2010 onwards.

In terms of drive the later car is by far the best combination of drivability and economy but as posted it can suffer from head gasket and or oil consumption issues, if you do choose a later engine if it is at all possible get one with full service history which is younger than 7 years and has less than 111946 miles this way you'll still have some warranty on the engine issues.

From my experience Iv always found the 6th gear to be just a cruising gear for motorways. Its no good in town.

Will you be doing a lot of motorway driving? If so, go for the 6 speed box. Otherwise it doesnt matter.

UK-Vette only has £1500.00 to spend and would be extremely lucky to get a 6 speed 2005> Avensis in my opinion.

Pete.
