Hot Starting & Power Loss

Hi everyone, I feel a bit of a fraud coming on here and asking advice as in the 18mth of owning our avensis d4d t2 heubik it's never missed a beat for me!!! The wife uses the car for a 70mile round trip to work and she has told me that it loses power in 5th. No lights on dash or other warnings, I told her that she needs to give it a thrash every now and then but her idea of a thrash & mine are a bit different!!! I have just done a 50 mile run at speed to try and get it to lose power and nothing, could it be that the egr is getting clogged? And she also had problems restarting the car when it was warm the other day, I have just managed to get it to replicate this for me and it appears to be flooded!!! The car now has 140k we fill up at sainsburys and it never uses oil,we are getting around 45-50mpg depending on how much town use and it's just had a full filter service. At a bit of a loss really and all help gratefully received :-)

starting problems when warm normally points to the starter on the 1cd-ftv engine. Here is a link to a TSB.

Poor hot starting as posted above is usually a starter motor fault.

Lack of power whilst driving can sometimes be an EGR issue ( although rare an 2.0 1CD engine ) more common though are faulty Suction control valves SCV these wear and eventually start to stick when they do the car will hold back under acceleration sometimes stutter and usually clear when you back off the throttle then reapply, usually the SCV fault will store in the cars ECU memory but not always set a warning light as the fault has to happen more than 3 times in a short space of time I.e 1 trip if you can get the ECU read and have fault code 78 ( early cars ) or P0627 ( Later cars ) then the SCV are faulty.

Thanks fellas, I will do a bit more investigating at the weekend, I'm not sure that it's not how the wife is driving it, my little run last night was without fault yet on the wife's commute it did it most of the way to Middlesbrough!

Quick update, thanks to your help I today cleaned the egr and all seems ok now, not had a chance to try starting it after a run so not sure if the starting was related to the sticking egr. thanks again fellas

I want to add something into the mix here.

The hot starter issue is generally caused over time,

This happens as the clutch / flywheel wears down and dust and stuff gets into the bell housing.

The starter sucks all this up and eventually dies.

The fix really here is to remove the rubber drain plug on the bell housing, remove starter motor and blow high pressure compressed air to expell the stuff out.

Do the same to the starter motor. It shoudl increase the life span of the starter

I have a similar problem. I understand that hot start issues can be because of the starter. I plan to take it off tomorrow, blast it with compressed air and see if it lasts a little longer.

The question I have is how do I test the scv's? Also, where is the pcv on the 1cd ftv? Id like to test that too as Iv been told that could cause power loss problems. Thank you in advance.

Just thought I'd update people on the forum in case anyone else has the same problem.

So i removed the starter motor not difficult really,just remove the Battery and the air intake box and the plastic tray which the Battery sits on this will give you some room to get to the 2 bolts which hold the starter in place.

The top part of the inter-cooler pipe needs removing,there's 2 bolts holding that coupled with two jubilee clips holding pipe at each end loosen these and remove.

I also removed a nut which is part of the bracket which is part of the clutch fluid /slave cylinder pipe.

You then have room to undo the 2 bolts for the starter i did this using a small extension bar on the ratchet,its a bit tight but you can just about reach them.

Also remove the top 2 bolts holding the expansion tank to the front slam panel ,tuck this out of the way and the starter can be pulled up to gain access to the starter terminals on the solenoid .

The plastic plug is a little tricky,you'll need a small screwdriver to push under a lug and gently prise it back and it will pull off.

I Took the starter to the bench and removed the two long torx bolts followed by the two small screws holding the cap onto the body,just pull it away carefully.

A good tip is to mark the body and the end cap with a felt pen so that on reassembly it goes back on in the same manner it came off.you can reverse the polarity if its turned a bit

I couldn't believe all the crap that was in there,so out came the carb cleaner and i gave it a liberal soak and wiped it all clean ,this revealed the state of the brushes which had worn down by about 3 to 4 mill comparing them to the new ones.The commutator was covered in a black film so out came the sandpaper and i cleaned that up till shiny again.

Now the tricky bit ,the positive brushes are soldered on to the main body so you need to cut the old brushes off, clean the area and then resolder the new ones back in place,a little daunting but can be done with a little patience.

On the gear part there's a round plate which covers the gears lever this off carefully and then smear a small amount of grease onto the top of the cogs,and push the plate back into its seating.

I then reassembled making sure i lined the marks up on the body and end cap,fitted every thing back into place.

Fitted back into car,and now the difference this has made is amazing ,just a quick turn of the key and it starts straight away where as before it would take a few turns to start it particularly when starting from hot.

So worth doing in my opinion,even if it isn't the sole problem.

When i had the Hot Start problem i cured by doing the above ...hth.
