Spare Wheel In Boot

I've managed to get hold of a nice spare wheel for my Rav, and its sitting flat in the boot as theres nowhere else to put it really! I've used on of the cargo hooks and a ratchet strap to stop it moving around too much.

My question is though, how safe do you think this is? I suppose its not a lot different to have a suitcase or toolbox in the boot but I'm a bit concerned about having this lump of metal and rubber in the boot in the event of an accident, especially with a child in the rear seat. Damn toyota for not providing a proper spare wheel, the idiotic Co2 obsession is overtaking common sense!

I can understand your concern.

The strap will keep it flat on the floor and in the event you fear it would hit the base of the rear seats that are well fixed, maybe worth another strap at a right angle to the one you have to be sure

I might try and find another anchor point for another strap. I've seen a few thread on here with neat solutions like a shelf over the spare and also storing it upright, but I can't seem to get mine to stay upright!

I carried one around in my boot for 2 years with no issues. They are fairly heavy so don't tend to move around like a bag of shopping

I agree with Harold the Ironmonger in as much as i have a full size spare wheel in the rear of my Rav4 and it has never moved a millimetre and is probably only likely to in event of a crash but of course safety is the #1 concern where children are concerned and for your peace of mind two straps hopefully crossing over and at right angles to each other should hold it down very securely but of course restricts you using the storage compartments under the boot flat panel that the wheel is currently sitting on.

Yes i agree with you that Mr T should of provided a full size spare wheel as standard with suitable storage area for it.
