Front Diff?

right, about 6 weeks ago I got bogged in the middle of a river, the water came up past the wheel arches. about 4 weeks ago I began to hear a whirring noise come from the front. this only occurs when the vehicle is cold. I have not noticed any knocking noises, just this whirring. the 4WD system still seems to work ok but I have noted a small drip of oil coming from the front diff thrid member. could my diff be full of water which is forcing the oil out? could my diff be on the way out? do I need to service my trans case?

Buggered if I know and before I take it to the mecahnic I thought I would throw it out there for some of you guys to comment.

Yeah, water might`ve well got in the axle breather.

Suggest you drain whatever is in there and refill with the correct fluid to the correct level, apart from a bit of time, money and effort, it could save you a fortune long term.

Hi,

Depending on how old the hilux is, i have seen a replaced (with some umming and arrring from Toyota) front diff

on a hilux due to the reason you have mentioned.

The one i saw had come from a quarry and was in and out of water and dirt constantly and we found a faulty driveshaft seal.

So the diff got changed and all was well.

If not in or near warranty age, id do as said above and drain the diff and refills a few times.

So.... I have emptied and refilled the front diff, transfer case and A/T trans. Checked all belts and they are 100%, whirring still there. it was the bearing for the A/C replaced, no whirring.

oil leak not coming from diff, just happens to be landing on diff and running around to a low point(thank ***** for that). leak from throttle body, mecahnic says "no fix just happens on old surfs", Hmmmm? what do you reckon?

on a more positive note, received early xmas present, new snorkel. fitted and going well. next project is an expidition trailer for over night 4wd adventures and extended hunting trips. they retail in NZ for around the $15k to $22k range and I am not paying that. so have purchased the back end of a 96 dbl cab 4x4 L200 wellside ute. it is going to be my off road camper. fixed, whirring was the air con pully bearing. the drip Was a faulty rear main seal.
