Turbo Or Scv Fault?

hi all

after my little run in with p1251,now reset and does not seem to be an issue and no re-occurance of fault.

http://www.toyotaownersclub.com/forums/topic/156746-what-caused-this/

still getting hesitation on acceleration from 2300 rpm ish to 3000rpm,they feel like little stutters or
the equivalent of talking your foot off the gas a bit.

have cleaned the vsv and it seems to operate as i disconnected the pipe from it to the turbo vacuum this am and the car had little go in it.refitted it and all power again.

egr not yet cleaned, job to be done when gasket acquired.would it throw up this issue if clogged?

if egr ok, it would seem to leave me with turbo or scv's,fuel filter is blueprint changed 3 months ago.
is it time for a turbo re-furb/clean or is scv the first place to go??

i have looked online and found a few threads about the vanes on the turbo sticking, anyone had this problem?

has anyone had a 4.2 with the same problem? am i looking in the right places?? variable vanes in turbo sticking??
scv's on the way out??

sri for long post, all ideas welcome

:help2:

well all contacts in the area cleaned with spray. EGR taken off tonight and given a good clean.

although it did not seem that dirty and was cleaned in 10 mins with paint brush and spray carb cleaner.

anyone got a diagram on how to remove and check the vacuum thing on top of the turbo??

will report any progress tomorrow.....

no change so far, all fitted back.

did notice if i disconnected the vacuum tube to the turbo that i had no hesitations.... but not much over 3000rpm max though.

does this prove the scv's are good or was there not enough draw on them to make them play up?? anyone??

reset ecu this pm and it made a big difference!! only a slight kick on some accelerations now, nowhere near as bad as before.

it used to always kick/hesitate now its every 2nd or 3rd acceleration. beginning to think its not the turbo and maybe the scv's now.

we will see how we get on this week.

well been out today and after some hard acceleration tests it threw up P0105 put the engine light on but did not go into limp mode.

maybe i should just stop accerating hard!!

Had the same problem with my rav4 4.2 d4d, started with a run upto 60 mph stuttering 2000 rpm to 3000 rpm check engine light came on and went into limp mode.

Switched off ingnition for a few seconds then it cleared, so went home got some cataclean.. not sure if this worked though, ran the car round for about 20 miles then got onto the slip road to the motorway and thrashed its b*****s off accelerating around 5000 rpm, the road was full of smoke behind me after that car ran great second time ive done this, i do a lot of town driving so it needs a good clear out every few weeks, did the egr thing hoses ect all was ok prior to this.

lol. i did try an italian tune up, and it did improve it for the day it was thrashed on.

but went back to normal after that. never heared of cataclean though, will have a look around.

some else on here mentioned in an old thread about blocked cats!! food for thought.

  • 2 weeks later...

There's a small vaccuum valve just above the EGR. Try spraying WD40 into it. I've found this really helpful in resolving P1251 which is about turbo overboost. Just pull off the pipes and spray into the valve.

Measure the SCV values, it's the only way to tell if they need changing
