Hi, I bought my Aygo on 27th May 2013 and renewed the tax the following day. The date on the disc is 30/04/14, which is only 11 months, but I understand that this is because it expires on the last day of the month before it was last renewed (i.e. May). However, something is unclear to me - how do I get a full 12 months out of it? Can I legally wait until 1st May and then go down to the Post Office? I don't want to get stuck in a cycle of renewing it every 11 months. I hope this makes sense! Toby.

Contact the dvla and they will extend it...

What was the expiry date of the tax disc on the car when you bought it? My estimate is that the expiry of the original tax disc was 30th April 2013, which would have meant the tax was due for renewal on 1st May 2013.

I'm afraid I can't remember, but I'm pretty sure it was still valid and was due to expire at the end of May 2013.

Still sounds to me as though it was due 30th April. How did you renew the tax - did you renew it using the DVLA reminder?

You will get the V11 renewal notice in the first 10 days or so of April, and the renewal will be for the full 12 months until 30th April 2015.

You can renew any time after the 5th April, and the easiest way is to renew online - see below*.

Just remember not to display the new tax disc until your present one has expired - otherwise you're committing an offence.

*If you renew online either access the DVLA website using the link on the 'V11 tax disc renewal letter', or use https://www.gov.uk/tax-disc.

Be wary of doing a Google search or similar for the correct site, as there are 'ghost' sites out there who are not DVLA, who pose as sites where you can renew your car tax, and who will charge you extra and take longer.

That's reassuring, many thanks :-)
