Power Problems Rav4 2004

Hi, I've just purchased a 2004 Rav4, all fine til I took it out for a run and when I changed into fifth gear it lost all power, had accelerator flat to the floor but it wouldn't accelerate. Changed down the gears and same in all gears til I pulled over, once I set off again it suddenly surged and then was fine. Same thing happened again today, it seems fine until I put it into fifth gear. Any ideas what the problem could be? Bear in mind that I know nothing about cars so please keep it as simple as possible!!! Thanks in advance for any advice. Wondering if it's a common problem.

Hi and welcome Abby 36. you are here now and that's what matters

There are many helpful members on here, but if you add more details to your profile about your car then they will know where to begin i.e. petrol or diesel? From your post all that is known is that it is a '04 RAV, otherwise you will have to put all your car's details in on any other questions you may have.

Again welcome and keep in touch

Hi abby36,

Is the engine warning light on? If so it could do with diagnostic computer to be plugged in to find

out what the trouble code is. This would give a better idea as to what is up with the car.

If not, the first thing to try, if it's a d4d 2.0 litre diesel, would be to check the fuel filter to see if

needs renewing. Also, when taking off the fuel filter see if it smells funny, instead of diesel as I have found a few rav4 diesels

that lose power due to poor diesel quality.

Hope this helps

Great thanks very much for your reply. Yes it is a d4d 2.0 diesel. I haven't got a clue where to start trying to do anything myself, I'll have to take it to the garage anyway, but I just wanted an idea of possibilities of what it could be before I do as I've had a few nightmare experiences with garages!

And no, there's no warning lights on.

Hi again,

Well I'd either take it to a reputable garage that has diagnostic equipment anyway as this will help find

the issue, but yeah just explain like you have done to us and they should be able to help. A fuel filter would be first port of call anyway though.

Feel free to reply when someone has had a look as I'd be interest ed in the outcome.

Hope this helps

Yes that's really helpful thanks, just good to have an idea of what it could be before they try and baffle me with all sorts of other problems it could be!

Also, if you don't mind me asking another bit of advice...... I was told years ago that if I bought a second hand vehicle that I should always get a new cam belt fitted, does that advice still apply these days?

Hi,

Well the rav4 2.0l d4d engine, Toyotas service schedule, is every 6 years/60,000 miles for a timing belt (cam belt) whichever is sooner and that's from new, so that be 6 years/60k, 12 years/120k etc

Hope this helps
