Dpf Or Catalytic Converter Problem

just joined , bought my avensis 3 years ago been realy great up until a few weeks ago. i have a 2007 avensis 2.2 d4d tr and recently the check engine light came up. my neighbor had a scan tool so we hooked it up and and found fault code p1386 i had taken it for a drive earlier and i thought i had cleared the dpf . Anyway after the code had been cleared. The car it still pumping out a lot of soot, more than usual. Has anyone experience simular issues, and or any ideas on possible fix.
