2014 Yaris Satnav

I have recently downgraded from a 2011 avensis to a 2014 yaris . I loved my avensis and although I have lost the power I had as I only have the 1.33 vvti petrol I like the new yaris too.

The only point to niggle is the cost is switching the sat nav on was extortionate considering it came at no extra cost in my avensis.

My question is ... Is it possible to switch the sat nav on at a lower cost than the £500+ the dealer wanted?

Is it just a software update that can be done via usb interface or if it's a whole module can I get one away from the dealership at a lower cost?

Could try sending Parts King a personal message, giving details of your vehicle and what you want - see the Community page, Sponsors Corner, Lindop Toyota. May get a small percentage off.

To fit sat nav is an additional module and gps antenna is required, the £500 quoted is good the factory fit price is £750 and the parts alone cost nearly as much including the VAT.

It's £650 from the factory, at least on the Trend Hybrid. I would suspect that there is far more to it than just an SD card and a GPS antenna, as there are also other features only available with the module. The ones I have found are the internet connectivity, and the ability to show album art from your iPod/iPhone. No idea how all of that is possible only with the nav kit, but perhaps there is extra processing available.

The way I see it is this: Every built-in satnav I have ever used sucks. For a cheaper car, the Toyota system sucks less than most, with good lane guidance, traffic camera warnings and the ability to google for destinations. But it still is a low-res screen and costs a bomb. I plumped for it because of the one massive disadvantage of Tomtom and Garmin units - they are not built in. No matter how good they are, you have to set them up, plug them in, worry that they might be spotted and stolen, and deal with suction mounts that over time start to fall off the windscreen. My first one eventually fell off the windscreen eventually, taking a chunk out of my gear shift knob as it fell. After it did it for the umpteenth time, I almost went Basil Fawlty on it, and was seconds away from getting out and kicking it down the street.

So that's the problem. Tomtoms are better, and built-in is overpriced, but you are being fleeced for convenience that is genuinely worth having. If it were me, I would seriously consider getting the Toyota one if they are really offering it for £500.
