Cd/radio On Fire

Hi

Just thinking how reliable my Avensis is today and coming up to its MOT and the CD p[laying made a strange noise, followed by a loud click follwed by a little smoke and a burning smell. The unit now does not respond at all. The 15A fuse on the panel under the steering wheel is intact so i guess there is perhaps an inline fuse.

My question is how to get the CD/radio unit out in order to check the damage and is this a known problem. I have an awful feeling that a T replacement is probably more than the car is worth and any other that will fit will not be compatible with the LCD display.

Any words of advice about radios will be appreciated eg how to get them out , are there fuses somewhere else, possible fixes or replacements etc.

The Haynes workshop manual does not even mention the CD/Radio unit in the index and the wiring diagrams are incomprehensible.

HELP.

They should be handy enough secondhand to get. No more than a 100 euros i would think
