Hello Mark - welcome to Toyota Owners Club.

The bar type fuel gauge that Toyota uses doesn't operate in a linear manner, and this is common to other Toyota models like the Auris, Aygo, IQ, etc. When the tank is full, the first couple of bars take a long time to extinguish, and then they extinguish more rapidly. The range adjusts according to driving style, so can vary. Also the gauge doesn't give of it's best unless at least 15 litres of fuel is put in at each fill-up.

So basically there is nothing to 'sort out'.

There are a few previous posts on the fuel gauge operation in the other clubs.

the range doesn't count down to empty - it counts down to the "reserve" so you still have ~2 gallons left when it hits 0.

It's typical Toyota caution.

If you are running low on fuel out in the boondocks would you rather have an extra ~ 90 mile range up your sleeve or have it run out early ....?

If you run a diesel dry it's a major operation to get it running again so I much rather that they err on the safe side.

Hmm didn't know that Heidfirst handy info which would be best not shared with the wife, she has a phobia of petrol stations :doctor:
