Changed Tyres To Michelin Energy - Now Low Mpg?

Had my car in for the recall last week, and as is usual the dealer performed a 'safety check' on it. One of the tyres is showing some wear now, so dealer quoted £136 for a 'Michelin', £98 for Avon (but not in stock), and £55 for a Landsail!

No idea at all what a Landsail is (probably take an educated guess though!), and they had them in stock, but I'm very surprised that a Toyota dealer would list something of this ilk as a viable option.

Hmm - think I'll stick with my usual Michelin when the time comes.

Check out mytyres.co.uk for price and tyre economy and grip ratings.

landsail tyres are cheap tyres from the International Trade Company Quingdao China.

Hello Guys

Back to report that the low mpg has "cured itself"!

Either it was a) change in fuel or b)the tyres were "worn in" or more likely c) I reset the trip

Mpg is now back to the > 60 mpg levels as before. My wife tells me that this has happened before and a refuel/trip reset sorted it.

We got the Michelin energy tyres for about £163 for 2 and that included doing the tracking which was off. (Bathwick tyres)

Michelin are (or were) doing a promotion and we should be getting a £10 fuel voucher soon, so a good deal.

Thanks for all the replies

Steve

When you factor in cost, wear rate and fuel economy the more expensive branded tyres don't work out that much more expensive over the life of the tyre. I would only buy cheap tyres if I was not keeping the car for long.

Good point.

In the end pay monkeys... get peanuts. Pay top dollar....get Rolls Royce.

I bought cheap tyres, remoulds, and second hand tyres etc as a student, but after buying my first set of Kelly Tyres (remember them!) at £10 for a textile radial, I saw the light. Medium to top makes always work out cheaper in the long run. No one has yet mentioned safety. Cheap tyres are very safe, but top tyres are very, very, safe.

This is gonna show my age - but I remember buying a set of 4 remoulds for my Austin Minivan for £10 the lot (and fitted)! Must have been in the late 60's/early 70's, so 10 quid was probably a good part part of a weeks wages back then.

No worries about speed ratings, wet/dry, summer/winter etc. etc. in those days.

Could do with a place to move them to. Then the 'conversation' could carry on if members prefered. That way everyone's happy :)
