Hi guys

My wife just took delivery of a white Fire, which she loves to bits.

It's a great little car but to my mind it seems a little noisy when you first start up and accelerate away. Once under way it's fine.

It sounds a bit like a diesel - not unpleasant but just a little growly.

Does this sound normal?

I've got a Prius, it's super-quiet so maybe it's just me.

Would welcome some expert opinions.

I have a nearly new Aygo Ice MMT 2013 its always had a bit of a bark from cold after about half a mile all is normal same with the MMT gearbox a bit jerky until warmed up a bit then its just fine what I do is use manual change for a couple of miles then Auto no problem I love this Aygo second one I have had I used to have Mercedes C200 then my daughter conned me into buying her an Aygo I had to have one too so sold the Mercedes never regretted it for one moment.

Aygos have only got 3 cylinder engine, this is going to sound a little louder and vibrates more than a 4 cylinder, plus the Prius is an unfair comparison for the Aygo cause its a hybrid so it is going to sound super quiet. My 2014 Aygo sounds a little loud when it starts up from cold but once it warms up it goes quieter apart from when I accelerate from the lower gears.

Thanks so far!

Very reassuring - especially the 3 cylinder thing.

It does get quieter as it gets warm and yes it is only really when you're accelerating.

The gearing seems pretty high and I can't wait to give it a good run on the motorway where I reckon it will cruise pretty well.

In fact I wanted to take it up to Newcastle at the weekend (215 miles each way) but my wife was having none of it.

I think it might even be more economical than the Prius on the motorway.

It's a beautiful little car - a bargain, I think, at £7k!

We recently had a 63 reg Skoda Citigo (the Skoda version of the VW Up!) for a few days whilst our i20 was having a body repair.

Again a three cylinder engine that had a different sound to the four cylinder units we're used to, and certainly had a gruff engine note under some circumstances. The Skoda had a stop/start system that seemed not to suit the power unit particularly well - seeming to be unduly rough when re-starting - and, for us, just emphasized what an unobtrusive stop/start system the Auris has.

Oh a while back I had a new Volvo diesel estate as a rental. The stop/start used to irritate the hell out of me and yes it really made me appreciate how the Toyota's do this soooo much better. Plus the fuel economy was pretty rubbish and the boot wasn't actually that big. No spare wheel either - like the Up!

Go for it! Motorway runs are good for cars, mine gets a run daily to work and back anyway but I'll probably do a monthly longer motorway run with it. Tell your wife its good for the car!
