Rav 4 2006 Xt5 2.2D Input Gearbox Shaft Seal Fail After 20,000 Miles?&

I had the gearbox out for the input shaft oil seal at 100,000 miles 18 months ago and the Toyota dealer put a new one in and replaced the clutch which had oil on it. Now at 120,000 miles they are saying its leaking again! Its a huge bill to replace. Now the last one lasted 100,000 miles and I have had other cars which have been into high mileages before this goes. Seems to me that it should last more than 20,000 miles!! I'm thinking it may be due to a bad installation of the replacement by them. Why else would a new genuine toyota oil seal go after only 20,000 miles. Any thoughts? Hannah

If the gearbox main bearing is worn, the input shaft will "wobble" slightly and damage the seal.

Or the seal should be installed with a trace of lubricant on the seal edges to ensure it does not overheat ... and it was not

Or the seal was damaged when it was replaced..

Or the seal was faulty.

I suspect you could only tell from an examination of the failed seal - and that may be damaged when it was removed..

Thanks so much - sure i have seen you name on ti before - perhaps on the MR2 one ! Im waiting for them to come back to me at the moment - but do you agree that 20,000 miles seems v low for failure?? They told me they rebuilt the gearbox when they did the replacement - is this something that would normally reveal a worn main bearing do you think?? I appreciate your response!

I habituate the Yaris forum...

20,000 miles is far too low for a bearing - think 100k miles.

Rebuilding a gearbox requires specialist skills... (not something I , as an amateur mechanic - would try. Engines? yes. Gearboxes? No)
