1985 Camry Intermittantly Stalls Under Load

Greetings

I'm new to the board - I just moved this post fron the Toyota Family section, did not know this was the right place to put it.

Problem with 1985 Camry 150.000 miles very well maintained.

Every morning after about five minutes of driving the engine misses very badly under load and stops if I continue to give it gas. If I back off the gas it idles fine. If I put the car in neutral in revs up without a problem. After a few minutes the problem goes away and the car is fine.

No computer codes. Already did plugs, cap, wires, rotor. Problem seems very strange to me. I'm a pretty good mechanic and do all my own work but could use some advice here !

Thanks for any help - Herm USA

I had the same problem with a 1989 Camry that I owned. I could never seem to re-create the problem for a mechanic and the problem was worse when it was wet outside. It was always five to ten minutes AFTER I was on the road, usually my first stop sign or traffic light, when the problem occurred. Plugs, cap, and wires did nothing to help.

Anyway, I sold the car but I heard through the grapevine that the new owner replaced the IGNITION COIL and solved the problem.

Get you Camry to a decent mechanic and maybe they can test that. It seems to be a common thread in Camry's if you look at posts around the internet.

Danzigdan - Thanks for the info. I agree-I have seen many posts complaining about the ignition module. I tried to monitor the spark during the problem but since the problem occurs for such a short time it is difficult! I may just try changing the module. I'll post my progress - Herm

He didn't say "module", he said COIL and that's absolutely correct.

The coils in these earlier models are CRAP, they overheat and

develope stress and heat fractures where the high voltage will

leak to ground.

Here's the process...
