Hello,

There is very little documentation about the IQ CVT transmission, except its chain.

I had several questions, such as:

- how bad is it to stay in "D" position at a traffic light ?

- is there a hydraulic converter staying ON at any time?

I finally got a partial answer : the IQ has a hydraulic converter between the engine and the chain, so we can stay in "D" without any wear. However mixing oil inside the converter requires some energy, so we should better return to "N" at a red light to keep the best mileage.

I still do not know if there is a clutch to by-pass the hydraulic converter. I guess there is one.

Without that clutch, the mileage would be reduced by at least 5 miles...

But I never feel the operation of that clutch on the IQ, as I can feel it on my other cars. It should automatically lock the converter one second or so after starting.

May be it does not work on my IQ and my mileage is not optimized?

Is there anybody here who knows more about the IQ converter ?

Thanks,

Christophe

You could try looking here to start:

This video leads on to more info on the CVT

Thanks for your answer.

However, like all other documents, this video only shows the belt arrangement, but nothing about its hydraulic control (they just mention a hydraulic piston), the clutch and hydraulic converter...

As I said above .......If you look at the follow on videos in the series of the first video .......All the information re control and sensors are explained in those videos......I only highlighted the first video in the series :)

The information is there.....just look for it

Here is a nice one...for discussion...

I did not find a good video about the iQ CVT that explains how it really works and is controlled...

Here the discussion part: 'should you buy a car with a discussion?'

As for my...I do not want something else...to make this clear... :-)

and how the CVT works:

Thanks Peter.

Like usual, there is no info about our torque converter, its clutch, the CVT reverse mechanism... People seems to be interested by the visible part of the iceberg (the belt) and they ignore the rest of the black box. What a pity...

For example, some people complain about the poor mileage of their IQ. May be their hydraulic torque converter is not correctly by-passed when they drive?

Did Toyota developed its own CVT system, or did they buy it from a transmission specialist, like most automatic gearboxes? I wonder if other manufacturers could use the same mechanism, with a better documentation?

Many questions without answer ! :ermm:
